Cathy Ross Brewer 1953

Julius Frost Hardison was known throughout the county. He loved to travel the back roads in his old sedan. Often with no destination in mind, he would just go for a ride many a time with a chubby little blonde-haired girl standing on the seat beside him as co-pilot. One time he told me - Cathy Ross Brewer that I could not go with him because my diaper was dirty and i needed to change my britches. I must have searched the house over with no luck until I desperately found what in my mind was suitable “britches”. Today I can only imagine the look on his face when I waddled up to him, ready to go, in my Mom’s girdle with the elastic garter hooks dragging along behind me. I really do not recall if he took me or not. But I suspect he laughed and put me on the seat beside him.

On September 25, 2021, my brothers had the opportunity to share a couple of items Andy had salvaged way back when he was only 11 or 12 years old. They teased me with the picture knowing my passion for our family ancestry. They asked if I knew what they were. Well, being the bright and astute person, I am I immediately identified them as an old clock and a radio from a car. I found it interesting that the radio was AM only with no FM channels which would make it a really old car.

After several text back and forth between us, I finally guessed - they were from my Granddaddy Frost Hardison's car. He died in 1956 and his car was parked and not driven again. Sometimes some of us grandkids would play in it - taking trips in our imagination. But the years and rust eventually took its toll and it had to be towed off before my Mom and Dad (having retired and moved home) could build their dream house. But not before Andy removed the clock and radio. I can't imagine what an 11 or 12-year-old wanted with the items, but I am glad he did. We spent a couple of hours sitting on the front porch at the Lake House reminiscing and it was fun!! I'm certain some of my cousins’ ears were burning that afternoon.
