Rogers
Twins, Lyle and Leon, were born in Columbia County in 1855. [1] Sometime between those births and 1859, the Rogers moved to Juneau County, WI. Here they seemed to form a close bond with the Buzzells and the Reynolds.
Orrin Rogers entered into Juneau County politics as a member of the Board in 1859, according to the Juneau County newspaper; he was then elected the first town chairman of Orange Township in 1861. The family is enumerated on the census for Orange Township in Juneau County, WI in 1860.[2]
Orrin H. Rogers, aged 43, enlisted in the army on December 18, 1861 at New Lisbon.[3] He was mustered in on February 10, 1862 in Milwaukee by a Captain Trowbridge. According to bi-monthly muster rolls of February 1862, Orrin had been sick at Racine, WI. He was transferred to 9th Wisconsin battery on March 31, 1962, but was discharged on Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability at Berton Barracks, MO, and mustered out June 28, 1862 on doctor’s order by Col. Merrell.
Things went downhill after Orrin’s discharge, likely due to his illness, and he began selling his land for non-payment of mortgage/taxes. By the summer of 1865, all the land had been sold. [4] The Rogers divorced sometime before 1870.
After his own discharge, Alfred and his brother, Harrison Rogers, settled near New City in Burnside Township. Nearby was William Buzzell, an early settler of Tracy Valley in Burnside. [5] William was the father of Abigail Buzzell, whom Alfred married in Osseo on December 2, 1866. Like Alfred, Abby had been born in Wisconsin (she in Walworth County). Her father came from Massachusetts, her mother, Mary Rogers, was born in 1827 in New York. Note: No connection has yet been found between Orrin Rogers and Mary Rogers, or Mary’s likely sister, Julianne.
In 1870, Amanda Rogers was enumerated in Naples Township, Buffalo County, with her mother, Mary Herring. [6] Mary’s half-brothers, the Farringtons, were also living in Buffalo County, WI in 1870. The Farringtons are often credited with the founding of Mondovi, in Buffalo County. [7]
It is interesting that the other families seemed to move to the town of Sumner, which is where my Rorabeck relatives lived, but not the Rogers, although Alfred Rogers was once the sheriff in Osseo.
Wilcox
David Alonzo and Lorena Wilcox had four children:
- Barnard, who moved to Wisconsin with his wife, Irene Sarah Clark. They had four children, including David Alonzo Wilcox who married Mary Etta Shipman in Osseo, Wisconsin in 1868.
- Walter "Ike", who married Tabitha Scott. Their son Walter Montgomery Wilcox was living in Juneau County, Wisconsin in 1860.
- Lucinda, who married Simipson Wilson; she died in 1882 in Jefferson County, New York.
- William Wilcox, who, along with his wife, Phylura, were living in Juneau County, Wisconsin in 1860. Their son, David Alonzo Wilcox, married Mary Beadle. David died in Mississippi during the Civil War. Their son, William Franklin Wilcox, married Betsy Clark (any relation to Sarah Clark?). I have at-DNA matches with at least two of William/Betsey's descendants. I also have matches with two of Steven Butterfield/Rachel Spaulding's daughters: Sarah and Betsey. Since each married a Searles, Searles needs to be eliminated before moving on to the B/Spauldings.
Buzzells
William Buzzell married Mary Rogers in Troy, Walworth County in 1846. They were married by William's uncle, Soldad Powers. They had five children:
- Olive, who died as a toddler.
- Curtis, born 1851, who was in Clearfield, Juneau County, with his parents in 1860; 1870 in Sumner, Trempealeau county with his parents, Etta, and Warren. He died in Sumner in 1887. Both of his children went to Montana.
- Abigail Buzzell was born in 1849 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. In 1860, 11 year-old Abby was living with her parents' in Juneau county, Wisconsin.[8] It was there that she likely first met her future husband, Alfred Henry Rogers. They married in Trempealeau county in 1866.[9]
- Etta married Richard Montgomery Reynolds in Osseo in 1875. By 1880, they were living in Mound Phillips Kansas near Etta's brother-in-law, Harrison Rogers. their son, Ray, is the ancestor of John Schleimer.
- Warren died at age 14 and is buried in Osseo.
Reynolds
Jabez Reynolds (1817) and his wife, Eliza Ann Wilcox, were living in Necedah, Juneau County in 1870. Eliza was the daughter of Walter "Ike" Wilcox. They stayed in Juneau County, although their son, Richard, was married to Etta Buzzell in Osseo.
Shipman
David Alonzo Wilcox married Mary Etta Shipman in Osseo. The Shipmans -- at least from the census record-- did not live in Juneau County but did end up in Sumner township. Jarvis was the father; daughter Mary Etta and son George, among others. George was the father of Anna Shipman, a friend of Clara Rogers (my grandmother). NOTE: I do have Shipman DNA matches that go way back, not sure if that is what I am matching, but they are distant cousins with each other: Kaboyle625 and CelticTLeah
