About the Project

The Juneby Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Juneby name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Juneby name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Sweden Junebys), by time period (18th Century Junebys), or by topic (Juneby DNA, Juneby Occupations, Juneby Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Name Origin

There are believed to be two unrelated origins of the name Juneby. One family originated in Sweden and the other in Alaska. For the Swedish origin, Ernst Josef Bertil (Larsson) Juneby (1908-1979) came up with the name Juneby. He worked as an editor for a newspaper in Jönköping, Sweden and changed his name from Larsson to Juneby. "June" comes from the creek Junebäck, which is believed to have given the name to the city Jönköping.[1] Then the last part "by", means village in Swedish.
