Kaimarama Cemetery

This cemetery was being prepared for opening in about 2018, land on SH25 having been purchased in 2012 and developed 2013 and 2017.

The site is 5.08ha, and situated in Mercury Bay. It is anticipated that the space in the new cemetery will offer interments for over 100 years. The site is intended to replace the Ferry Landing Cemetery which has almost reached capacity.

In March 2017 the Mercury Bay Community Board agreed (subject to iwi approval) to suggestions by locals to the name Kaimarama, as this was the historic name iwi and early settlers of the district used for the area surrounding the cemetery site.

The cemetery also hosts a WWI Memorial Forest site - this one pays tribute to not only the 37 men from Mercury Bay who were killed in the Great War, but the more than 2,000 New Zealand soldiers who fell in the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. 2,000 native trees are being planted at the cemetery to commemorate all these men. For more information on the WWI Memorial Forest see the Council web page www.tcdc.govt.nz/ww1memorialforest.

The main internal road servicing the cemetery will be called Kiteroa Place. The name Kiteroa, means "long view" and is based on the view from the cemetery property back to Whitianga/Mount Maungatawhiri.

Note there are no Find-a-Grave of BillionGraves pages as yet (Feb 2019) - it is not known if interments have commenced.
