Kamo (Ketenikau) Cemetery

Kamo Cemetery is situated in Ketenikau Road, Kamo. One of the smaller Council cemeteries, Kamo has very strong connections with the local Kamo community and a number of prominent families can be identified from the headstones and memorials.

Ketenikau Hill was purchased by a settler from Māori on the condition that the existing graves there would not be desecrated. It remained a Māori cemetery until 1882, when the local chief was persuaded to give permission for the first Pakeha to be buried in the grounds, selling a quarter of an acre for Pakeha burials.
