The Westland Disrict Council does not list the Karangarua Cemetery although it came under its jurisdiction in about 1960. The original road ran along the beach and rivers had no bridges, resulting in the death of many early miners and settlers by drowning. Two men were drowned in 1907 when they tried to cross the bar in a lauch at the Karangarua River mouth.
