Here are the profiles I, Karen Lee am currently working on. Can you help?
For tips see To-Do Lists. You might want to add a link on your profile like this: Karen's current to-do list.
In total I have identified 66 people who were enslaved by the extended Lee Families, or by people known to them, primarily in Boyle County and/or Lincoln County, Kentucky. Four were found to have been born in Virginia. I found their names of a variety of documents: Wills, Estate Records, Estate Auction Records, Birth Records and Death records, which were required for a short period.
I'm bookmarking work on this profile for some future date -- a slave owner who freed 61 slaves in 1828. John Meaux (1733-abt.1828)
Space:1875_Boyle_Mercer_County_DeBeers_Map_Clusters Studying neighboring slave owners with large numbers of slaves, who may have had family relationships with each other.
General tasks to do
- Add Parksville location categories to all who lived there.
- 1875 Boyle Mercer County DeBeers Map Clusters work on this page, as locations of slave owners become known, and post emancipation marriages of enslaved people who may have been neighbors. This will help identify the enslaves of the spouses of people whose enslavers are known.
- Check other tags for profiles to be sure they include Cemetery, location, status as an enslaved, freed, or enslaver,
- When appropriate add the following tags
Name= Pompey Lee (bef.1791-bef.1860) AND Nelly Lee (bef.1791-bef.1850) and their sons Jacob Lee (abt.1820-bef.1890) = Enslaved by George Penn Lee (1750-aft.1825) and willed to his son along with their young son Jacob Lee (abt.1820-bef.1890) to GPL's son George Theodore Lee (abt.1792-1879) Their known sons are Jacob 1820-1890, and Harry 1825. The slave schedules show them as the main couple of enslaved persons of reproductive age. There are many children, at present named, so finding them would be potentially possible, but difficult. See "Other Namable Slaves of George T Lee"

The Caldwell Families of Boyle County
Extensive notes on Patsey (Caldwell) Lee (abt.1835-aft.1898) IN Brief:
- Build both the AA Caldwells, and the EA Caldwells

The Welsh Families of Boyle County
Also neighbors and known to the Lees. The proximity of neighbors found on a period map is often a clue to the origins of enslaved couples who lived separately, but near by, prior to emanciaption, and later declared marriage, or legally married.
African American Genealogies of Boyle County, Kentucky
I have relied heavily on the work of Mike Denis, who compiled the African American Genealogies of Boyle County, from original records available locally.Michael J Denis, Danville, KY 40422. I abbreviate the reference as AAGBCKY.
His work is availbe online as a read only till 2024. He needs a new website, and I'm sure he could use help. In addition to the nearly 1000 page Genealogy, he has transcribed the entire enlistment records of Fort Nelson for enslisted men from Boyle County, and possibly those from Kentucky. He and the Danville Boyle County African American Historical Society have also transcribed Church, Marriage, Death Records, Funeral Programs, Cemetery headstones. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~kydaahs/index.htm
About his work he has written the following, which are good guidelines for anyone doing African American genealogy of the 19th century:
CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THIS WORK:
- There WILL be errors. Some are mine, some are not.
- Family records will NOT be complete, for various reasons.
- African-American records are more scarce than white records.
- Dates may vary, sometimes very widely. I can not determine which one is correct but instead I will include all references.
- Names can even vary, with some people using nicknames, or a middle name, when other names are considered “official.” Again, I can not determine which one is correct.
- There are virtually NO birth or death records prior to 1911 in Kentucky. There were several weak attempts prior to that, but very few events were documented.*
- There are NO LEGAL Black marriages prior to 1866.
- PLEASE use this, share this, add to this, make it more complete and accurate. But PLEASE give me credit for having written it in the first place.
WHY? I’ve been asked why a white man from Maine has become so interested in African American history and records in central Kentucky. Well, the answer is quite simple. I enjoy doing family history research, and it doesn’t matter WHAT families I work on. When I moved to Boyle County, I found that much of the work for white families was already done, so naturally I turned to African American records, of which nearly nothing was known. Gathering and assembling these family records, and writing a history of African Americans in Danville has become my passion. I don’t EVER want a young Black boy or girl in Boyle County to be able to say, I can’t find out anything about my family or my history.
My remarks on the above guidelines
- I did find some records of births of enslaved children, which sometimes also recorded the names of their mothers. Because they were recorded with a birth date and a first name for both child and mother, finding them in the post 1865 records was possible. I found them by looking up births in Boyle County, KY Recorded Briths recorded by Nelson T Lee and George T Lee between 1852 and 1854.
I would suggest that if you are looking for an enslaved person born during that period in Boyle County, that you consult the records of the Boyle County Kentucky Births. I also found one record of a 15 year old male who died during this period in a separate book of recorded deaths of enslaved people. From a scan of the Boyle County Kentucky Births, many births were recorded during this period. It would be fruitful to transcribe the records. Any takers?
- Last names of enslaved people who died before emancipation are provisional. During enslavement, any written records that recorded their names almost always only used a first name, and possibly a general age description. Therefore on profiles of persons who were enslaved, and of whom no post-emancipation records have been found, I have used a provisional Last Name At Birth, usually the name of their enslaver. If I have found records of the same person or a descendant that has a last name, I use that name, as it is clearly the one they chose for themselves when it became possible to use a last name.
Why do I do this work?
Why would a white woman from Rhode Island be interested in African American records of the 18th century of Kentucky.
I am an accidental genealogist.
I was raised being told by my father, "our family did not own slaves." He may have himself been told this lie by his father, or grandfather. But certainly his great grandfather who was born a son of a slaveholder, knew this. When or why this knowledge was concealed, I am unlikely to ever know.
However, I did find out the truth in 2022, from the wife of a cousin I hadn't seen since 1969 when we were children, contacted me on Facebook messenger after the death of my brother, Gerry. Joi, my cousin's wife is genealogist by choice. She told me about George Penn Lee's 1825 will that names slaves to be given to his inheritors. The information lit a fire in me,
Even though I know that the system of slavery was stitched into the fabric of Colonial America, and the emergence of the United States, I find it reprehensible that my ancestors owned slaves, likely from 1623 in the Colony of Virginia, right through to 1865 in Kentucky. I started doing the genealogy on my paternal ancestry, and started finding names of the just a few of the people they enslaved. Over a nine month period I found 66 names, some of which I was able to connect to records from after the Civil War to the 20th century.
I chose attempt to place these records here, on WikiTree, because WikiTree is free and open crowd sourced. I hope that others will add clarity where I have been inaccurate or uncertain. I hope that I leave enough information here that descendants of those enslaved by my ancestors can discover their ancestors. it is my attempt at reparations of a personal nature, the truth as best I can discover it, also known as genealogical reparations. It doesn't feel like "enough," but it is what I can do.
This work is also an attempt at ancestral healing, for both my ancestors, and the people they enslaved. Why do I include the notion of ancestral healing for my slave owning ancestors? I've come to the conclusion that they must have dehumanized themselves, that the entire culture of white colonial American was dehumanizing. How else could they profess Christian belief, and deny human identity to people they knew, their enslaved property? The answer is whiteness. Whiteness is an invisible, yet highly destructive force still very much alive.
Why ancestral healing? Well the short answer is that shamanic practices and ways of living have been my path from my earliest memories. I was raised in a Methodist household, but my true spiritual life was my relationship to the non-human living beings all around me, the plant, the animals, the insects.
What I've done on WikiTree
For some of the 66 people, I have begun the work of documenting their descendants, with the hopes of connecting their contemporary descendants with their enslaved ancestors, who they may or may not know of. Many of the 66 people cannot be connected to post 1865 records.
I have added my notes from the spreadsheet I keep on my computer.
Dates of Birth, unless stated "as certain" are estimates based on available data. The ages of enslaved people in the Slave Schedules were broadly defined as a range of years. The ages of former slaves listed in Census data from 1870 onward, vary considerably. This is of no surprise, as "birthdays" for enslaved people, many of whom were illiterate, were not kept as records, but transmitted orally, and subject to changes in memory over the decades.
Dates of death are given, only if known.
For some of the 66 people, I have begun the work of documenting their descendants, with the hopes of connecting their contemporary descendants with their enslaved ancestors, who they may or may not know of.
A √. mark means the profile has been entered and is as complete as I can make it. If there is a link to the profile it has been entered, but may need work. An "O "or no mark means I have yet to add the profile. It will take time. I try to be meticulous. It is slow work. It can take me a full day or more to complete one profile. I also have to take breaks to go out to the woods and commune with my relatives there, the oaks, the owls, the frogs, et al.
