Trying to prove or disprove that Eglar Carter[1] is the daughter of James Carter, son of Cato Carter. Also trying to find her mother.

1900 US Census (Freestone County, Texas)

  • James Carter M 24 (1876) Texas - married one year to Mollie.
  • Mollie Carter Wife F 27 Alabama - Mollie has had five children, four living.
  • Harvey Stallsworth Step-son M 11 Texas/AL/AL
  • Lillie Mae Stallsworth Step-daughter F 8 Texas/AL/AL
  • Aron Stallsworth Step-son M 6 Texas/AL/AL
  • Fannie Lou Carter Daughter F 4 (1896)Texas/TX/AL (they had written AL for father's place, but it's crossed out.)
  • "Ples Ella" Carter Daughter F 2 (1898) Texas/TX/AL

The Carters and Stallsworths were very intertwined. James' older sister Susan married a Stallsworth. Clearly these three Stallsworth children are Mollie's from a previous marriage. Is Mollie Fannie Lou and PlesElla's mother? 'Cause that makes five children, potentially.

1910 US Census (Dallas County, Texas)

  • Jim Carter 33 (1877) Texas - Janie and Jim have been married for three months, second marriages for both.
  • Janie Carter Wife F 22 (1888) Texas - no children
  • Fanny Lou Carter Daughter F 14 (1896) Texas
  • Plezzela Carter Daughter F 11 (1899) Texas
  • Tony (this is very hard to read) Carter Daughter F 7 (1903) Texas
  • Tankey (also very hard to read) Carter Daughter F 6 (1904) Texas
  • Buddie Carter Son M 5 (1905) Texas

This family is living next door to Cato and Margaret Carter, which for me is good evidence that this Jim Carter is Cato's son. (Some of his brothers and sisters have their households nearby.) But where is daughter Egler? She was born about 1901. Are all the kids in this record Mollie's? Janie says she has had no children. Could Egler be the daughter of a different James Carter? There's certainly more than one James Carter in Texas.

1920 US Census (Ellis County, Texas)

  • Jim Carter 48 (1872)
  • Janie Carter Wife F 32 (1888) Texas
  • Egler Carter Daughter F 19 (1901)Texas
  • Cenia Carter Daughter F 15 (1905) Texas
  • Louis Carter Son M 13 (1907) Texas
  • Loudell Carter Daughter F 4 (1906) Texas

LC and Eglar were married in January 1920, a few weeks after the census was taken.[2]

1930 US Census (Ellis County, Texas)

  • Jim Carter 54 (1876) Texas - age at first marriage 19 (1895)
  • Jane Carter Wife F 40 (1890) Texas - age at first marriage 21 (1911)
  • Egle Carter Daughter F 28 (1902) Texas
  • Ludell Carter Daughter F 14 Texas
  • Lucille Carter Adopted Daughter F 11 Texas

1930 US Census (Ellis County, Texas)

  • L C Reagor 31 Texas
  • Edler Reagor Wife F 28 Texas
  • El C Reagor Jr. Son M 2 Texas

Egler appears to have been enumerated twice in 1930. Very odd, considering she has a child. L.C. Reagor's birth certificate lists Eglar Carter as his mother. Is it possible that there are two Eglar Carters?

1940 US Census (Ellis County, Texas)

  • L C Reagor 41 Texas
  • Egler Reagor Wife 39 Texas
  • L C Reagor Son M 12 Texas
