Caution

The research about this family is less than exhaustive, in part because early Blair County land records and the accounting by estate administrators are not readily accessible. These missing records no doubt contributed to more than average relationship uncertainty .

Bibliographic Notes

Family Group--WIP

Children of Daniel and Mary ([?Hedrick]) Kemberling << were is the proof of her surname? Is Kemberling the right surname for the children?

  • Mary Ann Kimberling, probably born in Frankstown Township, October 1818 gravestone), died Frankstown Township, May 1899 (gravestone);[1] married, probably then Huntingdon County, by 1837 (birth of child), Enos Westover.
  • (possibly) John Kimberling, probably born in Frankstown Township, on or before 1820 (census), died in service during the Civil War, 1864;[2] married, probably then Huntingdon County, before 1844 (birth of child), Elizabeth Stewart;[3] he is presumed recorded as the male, under 10, in Daniel's 1820 census.
  • Henry Kimberling, born, probably Frankstown Township, 21 October 1822 (gravestone), died Tonganoxie, Leavenworth County, Kansas. 8 August 1892 (gravestone);[4] married, surely Blair County, before about 1845 (birth of child), Catherine Hileman.[5]

Altoona (Pennsylvania) Mirror
February 24, 1906
Enos Westover
Died at the home of his son, Winfield Westover, at Frankstown, Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, after an illness of three years. The deceased was aged 91 years, 2 months and 6 days. For the last year he had been entirely helpless and his son, Winfield, and wife cared for him. The deceased was born at what is now called Kladder station. Mr. Westover followed the occupation of a farmer, then a boatman and in later years worked as a miner and a furnace hand. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran church. His wife preceded him to the grave nine years ago. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. David Emfield of Roanoke, Va., Winfield of Frankstown, Mrs. F. K. Gerhart and Mrs. William E. Rodkey of Altoona. He is survived by twenty-eight grandchildren and thrity-five great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at the Geeseytown Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment at the Geeseytown cemetery.

Questions:
What is needed to prove his parentage? Family files suggest father is Oliver Westover (1775-1855).

Henry's marriage and wife makes no sense. Obit of 1895 says he married her 14 years ago, but the marriage license is dated 1892. Her father's 1880 census is probably here https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWFN-Z5K

Research Notes

Daughter Mary Ann. Brothers John and Daniel Kemberling/Kemmerling both lived at Frankstown Township, Blair County and had daughters named Mary Ann--some family files confuse the two.

  • Blair County Orphan's Court records report that in 1847, John's daughter Mary Ann was a minor, under the age of 14, living with her mother and step-father, Richard Bancroft. She is surely the Mary "Bancroft," age 14, enumerated with Richard and Lena Bancroft in the 1850 census. John's daughter Mary Ann later married Enoch Harpster.
  • Mary Ann, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Kemberling was older and married Enos Westover.

Hileman? "Catherine Hileman" in P. G. Bell, History and genealogical record of the Good and Hileman families of Pennsylvania ... (Altoona, Penn. Altoona Times, 1912), 166-167 (Michael Hileman), 201 Catherine Hileman/Henry Kemberling), 274 (Catherine Hileman/John Kemberling); digital images, InternetArchive.

  • 274. "Catherine, daughter of Michael and Mary Hileman, was born about the year 1799. The date of her death is unknown. When she married John Kemberling is also unknown. Michael HIleman in his will gave to his grandchildren the share of the deceased parent, and as there is no grandchild mentioned by the name of Kemberling, there were likely no children to this marriage, or if there were they probably died before their grandfather ... It is thought that John and Catherine Kemberling are buried in a graveyard on the farm of Lynn A. Brau, near Frankstown. There is no positive proof of any of the above statements, but after much inquiry and investigation, they are most likely correct."
  • 201. "Catherine Hileman, fifth child of George HIleman, Sr., married Henry Kemberling and moved to Kansas, where they both died. They had five children as follows: Daniel married Eliza Eberly, had no children. George married Lizzie Figart. Angus Kemberling married Mrs. Anne Cruse; had no family. Mary Kemberling married and is living in the west. Rebecca Kemberling married and is also livising [sic] in the west."
