Mine History
Mine Disaster Circumstances
- On 20 Jan between 10:00 and 11:00 Saturday night an explosion occurred in Kemmerer Coal and Coke Company Mine No. 4 on Wilson Creek. At the time of the explosion 100 miners were on shift, and many of them left the mine immediately unharmed. However, those miners working around the explosion five were killed and nine injured. Those miners injured were placed on a special train and taken to the state hospital in Rock Springs. All bodies of those killed during the explosion were recovered. The actual cause of the explosion was never determined, it was believed to have been caused by dust.
- At the time of the explosion Patrick J. Quealy, was away in Laramie at the funeral for his nephew. Quealy immediately returned and directed the rescue efforts with assistance of State Coal Mine Inspector George Blacker, Frank A. Manley, assistant general manager and James Needham of the Union Pacific Coal Company and W. M. Mooney, Superintendent of the Central Coal and Coke Company. [1]
