Introduction

Collated census records about Henry Kenyon & Alice Booth and their children's movements.

Census transcripts

1841 Lancashire > Bury > South Bury > District 7, page 5 of 26. Description " All those parts of the Township of Bury and Heap which lie south of Rochdale Road to the corner of Heap Bridge and North west of the River Reach in a straight line from George Street to that River and East of George Street as far as Edward Dawson's Property but not inclusive: (?) of this district incluedes Pimbole." Addresses of houses were not recorded.

Name Age/sex Occupation
Henry Kenyon 25/m Labourer
Alice Kenyon 20/f
John Kenyon 2/m

The familysearch version describes the residence as "Hurst Field" which I can't see from the form but I take it they know what they're doing? This name comes up again as a Birthplace for Margaret , unsourced on ancestry.com.

1851 Lancashire > Bury > North Bury > 1g Page 21 of 59. Note, incorrectly transcribed as Tharyon or worse in both Ancestry and Familysearch indices.

Interpretation of census

The grandchildren in the 1871 census are the children of Henry's son John Thomas Kenyon from his first marriage. (This was how we first found out John Thomas's parents were Henry and Alice).

In the 1861 census is the distinctive name Abraham Barcroft; a Lancashire BMD search tells us the Mother's Maiden Name is BOOTH.

All births to Kenyon/Booth in the timeframe

Name Year Sub-District Registers At
Edward Hhobson 1838 Deansgate Archives+ Manchester
John Thomas 1839 Bury North Bury
Samuel 1840 Great Harwood Preston
Mary 1842 Great Harwood Preston
Robert 1842 Bury South Bury
Mary Ann 1843 Accrington Preston
Margaret 1844 Bury South Bury
Margaret 1846 Accrington Preston
Abraham Barcroft 1847 Bury North Bury
Abraham Barcroft 1848 Bury North Bury
Robert 1848 Oswaldtwistle Preston
Jane Alice 1854 Bury North Bury

There were 5 registered marriages in Lancashire from 1837-1851 for KENYON/BOOTH (which doesn't include Henry and Alice). One was at Accrington (John Kenyon/Matilda Booth 1842).

OPC records

There are OPC Burial records for the above births Jane Alice, Robert and Edwin; which cite Henry Kenyon & Alice as parents. That means we have confirmed all of the Bury North / Bury South Kenyon/Booth as being this same couple. (Well, unless there are two Henry Kenyon / Booth, which I have seen no evidence of).

Interpretation of births

Although the burial records exist, there are no parish baptism records for anyone except Edwin.

Based on Margaret's age in censuses her birth should be 1844 or 1845. The couple hadn't moved to Accrington yet so the 1844 Bury South civil record should be her. (Robert 1842 was also listed as Bury South).
