Name Origin and Meaning

According to Bell's "Book of Ulster Surnames", KERNOHAN is a variant of the Irish name KERNAGHAN which also has the variants of KERNAHAN, CARNAHAN, CARNAGHAN, and MCKERNAN. The name was first found in the county of Donegal according to several sources. Apparently, KERNOHAN is now found mainly in County Antrim while KERNAGHAN is found mainly in County Armagh.

The name KERNAGHAN and variants comes from the Gaelic O Cearnachain, from "cearmach" meaning "victorious".
