Kildownet (New) Cemetery, Achill, County Mayo

Kildownet new cemetery is located on the other side (west side) of the main road from the old cemetery (Google Map). This cemetery is near the southern tip of Achill Island and lies within sight of Grace O'Malley's castle about 400 yards to the south.

In this cemetery is a memorial to the 9 teenagers and 1 young man from Achill who died in the Scottish fire tragedy of 1937. They were sleeping after potato picking in Kirkintilloch, Scotland when their hut caught fire. The door was padlocked on the outside and they all died. The tragedy is remembered in the song Hills Of Mayo
