Purpose

This is a subproject of the Kirtland Name Study. It identifies some things you can do to create and improve WikiTree information on Kirtland, Kirtlan, Kertland, and related surnames.

Tasks

1. Provide feedback about this task list and the Kirtland Name Study as a whole. What other research projects, categories, and tasks should be included? Should things be prioritized differently?
2. Add profiles you manage to the Kirtland Name Study or any of its research projects using the appropriate project, location and maintenance subcategories, e.g. by adding [[Category: TOPIC/LOCATION, Kirtland Name Study]]. Request or create subcategories that are missing.
3. Add the one name study sticker to profiles you want to highlight as part of the study: {{One Name Study|name=Kirtland|category=TOPIC/LOCATION, Kirtland Name Study}}.
4. Adopt orphaned profiles you are willing to work on and add them to the project by categorizing them.

5. Ask people who manage profiles that should belong to the project if they would like to join -or- if it's ok to add name study categories to their profiles.
6. Add maintenance categories to profiles that need work:

   • Category: Unsourced, Kirtland Name Study: missing good (or any) sources
7. Move profiles in Category: Kirtland Name Study to the appropriate subcategories.
8. Work on clearing profiles from the maintenance categories, according to your interests. If you need to move on from a profile, write research notes to help the next person who works on the profile.
9. If you can't find a person's parents, document what you've done in research notes and add Category: Kirtland Family Brick Walls, Kirtland Name Study.
10. Pick an indexed source (vital records, census, cemetery, etc.) for a location/year and research all the Kirtlands/Kirtlans/Kertlands/etc. returned by an exact surname search, creating profiles as needed (with the actual LNAB...).
11. Trace lines outside the U.K. back to the immigrant ancestor.
12. Trace U.K. lines back as far as you can go.
13. Identify prominent people in the scope of the study and write biographical sketches.
14. Identify place names related to the Kirtland Name Study surnames, figure out who they are named for and write it up.
