Introduction
Please Read This First.
Historical Jurisdiction. From 1604 until 1806, Kirtorf, Amt Kirtorf Eußergericht, Oberamt Alsfeld, Regierungsbezirk Gießen, Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt, Heiliges Römisches Reich (Auf Deutsch); or Kirtorf, Kirtorf District Court, Alsfeld District Office, Gießen Region, Hesse-Darmstadt County, Holy Roman Empire (In English).
If the event takes place in Kirtorf between 1604 and 1806 in the location field of a persons profile you might want to use the proper historical place as: Auf Deutsch: Kirtorf, Alsfeld, Gießen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Heiliges Römisches Reich; or In English: Kirtorf, Alsfeld, Gießen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Holy Roman Empire.
Availability. For these years, there are currently no records for Kirtorf on either Ancestry or Family Search. These records can still be accessed in two ways, all with certain restrictions. The information I have extracted here is from either the Family History Library In Use Only Family Search Film 1336979, or the paid for Archion Database 279126. I am currently revisiting the records on Archion.de to include specific digital image references to the facts included here that were originally extracted from microfilm. See: https://www.archion.de/de/viewer/?no_cache=1&type=churchRegister&uid=279126 [$, requires subscription]
Language. As an English speaker I have extracted and translated most of the information here to English. Some information I have transcribed in the original German, such as occupations, for context.
Locating the original. Please note that in brackets after each fact is a reference note to the page, entry, and image numbers in that order [page/entry/image]. The entry number is the entry for that particular year, usually included in the record. The image number corresponds to the digital image available in the Archion.de database. In rare cases an obscure F. Nr. (Familiennummer) was assigned, when found in the records I have included this in the source brackets as [page/entry/image/family number]. I strongly encourage you to use these as a reference to find the original record and view it for yourself.
Names. I have decided to standardize names here and include all of the variants in one place, instead of including each variant each time it came up. Also, a caution: whenever multiple men of the same name are found, they might be assigned die Ältesten, the Elder or der Jüngere, the Younger. This can, but usually doesn't implicate a father/son relationship. When more than two men of the same name appear, they seem to use Roman Numerals, again not in any implication of direct patrilineal descent. To add to this confusion, it seems even sometimes if one of these men died they would revert back to calling one that was formerly a Younger to Elder!
Sponsors and Witnesses. Sometimes the relationship of a sponsor or witness is included in the record. In these cases I have included that relationship to help reconstitute these families.
Family Reconstruction. The bulk of this page is the "Familienrekonstruktionsregister," alphabetized by surname, and then by head of household (Hausvater) by age (roughly). This is an effort to reconstruct the families of Kirtorf using the information in this particular set of records ranging from 1725-1768. The register format below is set up in the style of a traditional German Family Table, Register, Ortssippenbuch (town lineage book) or Ortsfamilienbuch (town family book).[1] There is no know extant Familienbuch for Kirtorf, however there seems to be reference to the existence of one in these records with the F. Nr. (Familiennummer) being listed in the marriage register. No such book has been found to have survived.
