Knowlton Background and Sources
Much of the information on the Internet is based on the 1897 family genealogy, The History and Genealogy of the Knowltons of England and America by the Reverend Charles Henry Wright Stocking. While the "Stocking Bible" contains some excellent information on 19th century Knowltons, it was so riddled with errors on 18th century and earlier Knowltons that George Henry Knowlton published an Errata and Addenda to Dr. Stocking's genealogy only six years later. Both the Stocking Genealogy and the Errata are available at the link above; the Genealogy is searchable but as yet we have not had the Errata scanned with OCR. Physical copies of both books are also available on-demand from Amazon.
The two books together make for a fairly accurate work, but even they do not dispel the biggest "Knowlton Myth," which is the connection between the three Knowlton brothers who emigrated from England to Ipswich, MA in the 1630s to a noble family of Knowltons in Kent through the supposed father of the three brothers, Captain William Knowlton. See Captain Bill's entry for details, but the summary is that he never existed; the Kent family are Knowldens, not Knowltons; and DNA testing has established that there is no link between them and that the Knowlton brothers were born to tradesmen in Uxbridge in West London.
Many personal trees on Ancestry.com and Rootsweb are straight out of Stocking and reproduce this and numerous other errors. A great deal of research from the 1980s on has been organized through the Knowlton Rootsweb Mailing List, primarily by Elizabeth Knowlton (Rootsweb/Worldconnect) on the descendants of John (2) and Wendy Mulligan (Ancestry.com, membership required) on the descendants of William (3) though members from both sides have been instrumental in furthering research and analysis.
What You Can Do
The current status of Wikitree Knowlton entries is inconsistent as the best sources at the moment are those two individual trees. Efforts are underway to update all of the Knowltons from Stocking with the latest research from Rootsweb and Ancestry, but as there are thousands of them, this is a significant undertaking.
If you encounter a Knowlton that is unsourced or poorly sourced (or well-sourced but with spaghetti source layout from a GEDCOM), you can search for them on either or both of the two primary Knowlton databases above and update the corresponding Wikitree entry. While there is no standard format enforced, we recommend appropriate categorization and an easy-to-read layout of sources. For an example, see Nathan Knowlton (A12). For questions or assistance with this project, please contact Samuel Knowlton.
Another very important aspect of Knowlton genealogical research is the FTDNA Knowlton DNA Project on FTDNA
DNA testing has demonstrated with certainty that the descendants of John Knowlton (2) and William Knowlton (3) are not related through the male line. John's line falls into haplogroup R1b, while William's falls into haplogroup T. Current thinking as of August 2017 is that the initial three brothers (John, William, and Deacon Thomas) were biological brothers due to the lack of any indication in England (including the will of their kinsman, Ralph) that would hint otherwise. The likely source of the irregularity is John (5) but please see the DNA project link for additional details.

I'm also particularly interested in trying to learn more about Edward K. Knowlton Jr. born around 1908. [Knowlton-1203] There is uncertain information about his possible marriage and his death. I learned growing up (told to me by his sister, my grandmother) that he had died as a young man, but I have not been able to find any certain confirmation of his death date or location or any grave marker.
Also, I'm trying to find death dates and the burial locations of Edward Knowles Knowlton [Knowlton-1201] and his wife Florence "Flossie" Nichols Johnson [Unknown-381540] and Edward's father Daniel Robert Knowlton [Knowlton-1200] and his mother Caroline "Carrie" [Smith-134558].
My grandmother, who was very proud of her Knowlton ancestry and active in the DAR, seemed to indicate that there was some tragedy in her immediate family history, but which she never talked about explicitly, and the fact that it is so difficult to find much information on her brother, her parents or her paternal grandparents makes me think her branch of the family experienced difficult circumstances.
Feel pretty good about my data to Thomas Knowlton Ipswich, Essex, MA, US m. Marjory Goodhue 1671 on 2 Dec, 1692 in MA, USA but not clear going back from there.
