LAST NAME UNCERTAINTY My paternal grandfather came to the United States in 1908 under an assumed name. The story was his best friend decided the last minute to cancel his trip and gave my grandfather his boarding pass to him. Grandpa was a single guy and jumped at the chance to move to the US. Incidentally, he met my grandma on the ship. I don’t know what the friends name was because when he disembarked at Ellis Island that name was forgotten. He changed his real first name from Adalbert to George. He used the first part of his last name Kowalko (and chopped off the rest leaving it blowing in the wind for us all wondering about it).
