Narrative

During World War II, American and British military forces invaded northwestern Africa in November 1942 and began a push toward the east through the Atlas Mountains. Along with forces from further east, the allies closed in on the German and Italian bridgehead in northern Tunisia into the first half of 1943.

A natural travel route followed the Medjerda River, which flowed from Algeria through northern Tunisia and into the sea between the two Mediterranean Sea ports of Tunis and Bizerte. Halfway through Tunisia, an overland travel route split from the Medjerda River to go northeast through Béja city and around Mount Tahent on a more direct path to Bizerte.

Djebel (Mount) Tahent was key terrain, a defensible position with good observation and nearby support positions. The United States Army 34th Infantry Division and others were ordered to take that terrain in late April 1943, in what became known as the Battle of Hill 609. While preparing for that battle about 20 kilometers back toward Béja, the division’s 109th Medical Battalion set up operations at Ksar Mezouar (geographic coordinates 36.788115, 9.325221).[1]

After the battle, the U.S. Army established a temporary military cemetery at Ksar Mezouar (also spelled Qasr Mezouar), possibly at geographic coordinates 36.786736, 9.331364.[2][3][4][5] The army’s graves registration service maintained the cemetery into 1947,[6] when all such American military cemetery burials in Tunisia were transferred to a port cemetery in Tunis. In 1948, the burials were either repatriated to the United States or buried at the permanent North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial at nearby Carthage, Tunisia.[7][8]

British and German armed forces had fought each other in the Ksar Mezouar vicinity in February 1943.[9][10][11][12][13][14] A couple Commonwealth of Nations war cemeteries remain today in the general area around Ksar Mezouar.[15][16] A German war cemetery lies southeast from Tunis.[17]

Research Notes

  • We constructed this graves table by visually inspecting every imaged page in the U.S., Rosters of World War II Dead, 1939-1945 database on Ancestry.com from February to December 2024. From the rosters, the temporary interment site was not an indexed column in the database, thus requiring the visual inspection. Some images were obscured or blurred, so we have possibly missed records of burials at Ksar Mezouar American military cemetery. Murphy-21646 22:37, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
  • The contemporary aerial photograph (U.S. Air Force Number 60825AC)[2] shows the American military cemetery at Ksar Mezouar to have a semicircular entrance with flag pole and American flag, and a rectangular burial ground having a central walkway and a low perimeter fence. There is a burial section on each side of the walkway, each section having ten rows of five crosses per row, for a total of 100 marked graves. (Vegetation placed at the burial ground fence may obscure further details.) The semicircular entrance has room to allow a third burial section to be built. The cemetery lies adjacent to a road leading straight into the distance, with another road intersecting at an acute angle just beyond the cemetery. The road in the distance weaves left and right, curves and straightens to the left, then disappears behind a low hill and reappears going to the right off frame. A small pond appears in the left foreground, beyond the intersecting road. A line of low vegetation leads from the pond area into the distance, past trees; and what appears to be an eroded streambed follows the left side of the road toward hills in the background. Where the streambed passes the trees, another road leaves the first road, goes left into some trees, then curves in a clockwise hook to approach a group of buildings. Comparing this 1946 aerial photograph with present day mapping services, we suspect this cemetery’s geographic coordinates to have been 36.786736, 9.331364 .
