History of Lakeland Plantation

Lakeland Plantation was developed by Col. Edward McQueen Houstoun (1806-1875), who moved from Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, to Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida about 1836-1838. By 1850, the Leon County Tax Roll and US Agricultural Census Schedule listed the plantation as consisting of 1291 acres worked by 41 slaves, which produced 120 bales (400 pounds) of cotton. By 1860, it consisted of 900 improved acres and 3600 unimproved acres.^[1]

After the Civil War and presumably after his father, Edward, died in 1875, Edward's son Patrick Houstoun (1837-1901) took over the plantation and turned it into a stock farm.

"The former Houstoun plantation is an intrinsic part of the larger history of Leon County. For nearly 100 years, the plantation marked the eastern edge of Tallahassee. It stretched for nearly a mile north and south of Lafayette Street (Old St. Augustine Road), which was then the principal east-west road into Tallahassee. Members of the Houstoun family first began purchasing land in Tallahassee in 1826, shortly after the city’s founding. In time, the plantation holdings grew to encompass more than four square miles of land. This included all the area that is today the Country Club Estates, Myers Park, Woodland Drives and Indianhead Acres neighborhoods, as well as land that today includes the Tallahassee Democrat offices, Governor’s Square Mall, and portions of the Hilaman Golf Course. In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules, Edward Houston (aka Houstoun) was in Division 8, Leon, Florida, United States. The census listed 43 unnamed slaves.^[3]

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules, Edward Houstoun was in Leon, Florida, United States with 78 unnamed slaves.^[4]

Slaves identified through US Freedman's Bank Records as most likely being slaves of Edward Houstoun, as he brought them from Savannah to Tallahassee, Leon County Florida about 1836-1838 and/or they were living and working on his lands sometime between 1867-1869:
