Lanark Highlands, Ontario

The Township of Lanark Highlands was established on July 1, 1997 through the amalgamation of the former townships of Darling, Lanark, Lanark Village and the township of Lavant Dalhousie and North Sherbrooke Township which formed in 1850 and remained united until 1883, when Lavant separated. In 1974, Lavant reuited with the amalgamated Township.

Lanark Township

Lanark Township came into existence on July 1, 1867 when Canada West became Ontario.

Darling Township

The historical township of Darling is located in the hills to the west of Pakenham and north of Lanark Township and contains the communities of Tatlock, White and Marble Bluff, was named in 1822 after Colonel H.C. Darling. It was surveyed in 1820. It came into existence when the former Canada West became the Province of Ontario.

Lavant Township

Lavant was surveyed in 1822 and settled in 1828. It was named for a village in Sussex, England, in 1823.

North Sherbrooke Township

North Sherbrooke was surveyed and settled in 1821. It was named after Sir John Coape Sherbrooke.

Dalhousie Township

Dalhousie was surveyed and settled in 1820. It received its name in 1823, being named for George Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie.

Lanark Village

Lanark is a village in the township of Lanark Highlands, in Lanark County, Ontario. It was settled in 1820 by Scottish immigrants, who named it after the town of the same name in Scotland. The fall of 1820 saw a number of houses erected to form a nucleus of the village. The Post office was established in 1822. The growth of Lanark Village in the early years was slow and tedious. In 1862 the village of Lanark became incorporated.
