Lane Plantation
Joseph Harrison Lane and his son Joseph Skinner Lane and daughter-in-law Jane Knox Lane owned a farm or plantation in Brazeau Township, Perry County, Missouri. They held from 9 to 16 people enslaved from the early 1840s until the end of the Civil War.
James Monroe Abbot was enslaved by the Lane family. James was interviewed for the Federal Writers' Project, District 5, in Sikeston, Scott County, Missouri.[1] He said that the Lanes had a big house with porches, flowers all around it and sweet locust trees in the yard. They lived in Perry County, Missouri, a few miles from Seventy-Six Landing on the Mississippi River. In his interview, James Abbot mentioned his sister, his Uncle Rube, Aunt Hanna, and his Grampa, along with a woman named Lucy, all enslaved by the Lanes.
In the 1840 U.S. census, Joseph Harrison Lane and his family lived in Madison County, Mississippi, including six free white people: 1 Male under 5 years old, 1 Male 5 thru 9 years old, 1 Male 15 thru 19 years old, 1 Male 40 thru 49 years old, 1 Female 40 thru 49 years old, 1 Female 70 thru 79 years old. Joseph was the slave owner of four enslaved people (see below).[2] The obituary of his son Joseph Skinner Lane says that the family moved to Missouri about 1841.[3]
