About the Project

The Lanman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Lanman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Lanman name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Lanman's), by time period (18th Century Lanman's), or by topic (Lanman DNA, Lanman Occupations, Lanman Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

The goal of this project is to build and connect the Lanman clans in America, and trace back to our European roots. Gary M. Lanman authored a book about the Lanmans descended from the first Lanman immigrant in Virginia (his ancestor) https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Lanman_Genealogy.html?id=rmdzHQAACAAJ. Don Stone authored a book about the first Lanman immigrant in Massachusetts (my ancestor). Gary and I share nearly the same Y chromosome haplogroup M-R269 (based on Family Tree DNA Big-Y 700 testing) so we have a common male ancestor in England.

Tasks

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Find Lanmans in England and to find our Y chromosome haplogroup M-R269.
  • Encourage other Lanmans to enter the Lanman project.

Hi! I added text to the companion category for your name study (Category:Lanman Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

Cheers, Liz
