Background
Laurel Hill comprised 300 acres located on the southern side of the Scanawah Island portion of Edisto Island. Positioned on a bluff opposite Bailey's Island Creek, it was subject to erosion.[1]
In 1844 E. M. Seabrook purchased from Josiah E. Smith and his wife Eliza property which he calls in his will the Mikell Plantation. Seabrook Sr. also purchased, in 1841, the George's Plantation, from Mrs. (Providence) Mikell, passed to son Ephraim Mikell Seabrook Jr.[2][3] Both of these tracts together were called Laurel Hill.
These two tracts of land were sold for $17,000 in Jan 1857 to Edward W. Seabrook, from E. M. Seabrook of Bulls Island. E. M. Seabrook was the son of the late E. M. Seabrook of Brookland Plantation.[2]
- 5 March 1868, Edward W. Seabrook writes J. M. Johnston, agent, to apply for corn and bacon assistance to feed 30 adults and 27 children farming 200 acres (of cotton) + 100 acres (of corn) = 300 acres, the exact size of this plantation.
