Laurus Crawfordiana
Manuscript on the Scottish noble House of Crawford whose history and genealogy goes back to the 11th century. It bears the subtitle of "A Historicall and Genealogical Deduction of the Several families of the sir name of Crawfurd as weel such as are extinct as those who are yet extant from the time of King David the 1 till the present time". It covers the early history and genealogy of the descendants of the Crawford surname.
Not to be confused with Laurus Crawfurdiana: Memorials of that Branch of the Crawford Family which Comprises the Descendants of John Crawford of Virginia, 1660-1883 : with Notices of the Allied Families, a text published in 1909 and reprinted in 1974 by Mrs. Frank Armstrong Crawford Vanderbilt. This later text claims that John Crawford of Kilbirnie (b.1600) is the same John Crawford of Virginia who emigrated to the United States in 1643 with his son David (b. 1625), which DNA has proven to be incorrect. See John Crawford of Ayrshire, Scotland and Virginia, United States for an in-depth exploration of the evidence.
Crawford Lineage as notated by George Crawfurd
Note: Some of this information may be incorrect, as this was an unfinished manuscript, and there are many modifications/edits/duplicative information from the author. Compare this with other documentation to confirm
Despite the above note, George Crawfurd was a well-known and thorough historian and had unprecedented access to private records from the noble houses across Scotland when he compiled these notes, and is considered to be the single most authoritative source on the Crawford surname by the Clan Crawford Association.
This is a most excellent work by Dr. Raymond Crawford to translate and annotate the manuscript that is not available to those without physical access to the Edinburgh Judicial Faculty Library. We cousins thank him for his invaluable contribution to the study of our surname, and we encourage all interested parties to support his effort and the Clan Crawford Association by purchasing this manuscript for your own detailed study of the contents.
