Lawrence County, Ohio was created on 20 Dec 1816 from parts of Gallia County and Scioto County. It was named after James Lawrence.

• Lawrence County residents, especially those from the southern part of the county, are often found in vital records just across the Ohio River in Cabell County, West Virginia (particular in the city of Huntington) or in Boyd County, Kentucky (especially in the city of Catlettsburg).
• As of July 2023, the 1860 census in Lawrence County has many pages that are not indexed on FamilySearch - the original scans of these pages were illegible. FamilySearch has since replaced these scans with legible scans, but they have not indexed them. These census pages are legible and indexed on Ancestry.
