Merfyn Frich

His father -- Merfyn Frich, or Merfyn the Freckled is accepted as a real person, as is Merfyn's father Gwriad

Stewart Baldwin asserts that Merfyn's father Gwriad was probably from the Isle of Man, and possibly the person named on an inscription ("CRUX GURIAT") on a cross in the Isle of Man which has been dated to the eighth or ninth century. Baldwin adds that the genealogy which purports to make Gwriad a direct male-line descendant of Llywarch Hen is almost certainly a late fabrication. It is more likely that his paternal ancestors were among those who are named in HG.4, but the exact line of descent (if any) is uncertain, and Gwriad's parentage must be regarded as unknown. [1]

According to the pedigrees compiled in the mid-tenth century under the partonage of Merfyn's great-great-grandson, Owain ap Hywel Dda, Merfyn's mother was said to be Essyllt, daughter of Cynan ap Rhodri who died in 816, and niece of Hywel ap Rhodri, whose death in 825 left the leadership of Gwynedd open. Later pedigrees show Essyllt as Merfyn's wife, and the consensus of scholars is that Essyllt, about whom nothing else is known, was invented to tie the two dynasties together and give Merfyn's rule some legitimacy. [2]

Thornton states that Merfyn was linked to the earlier dynasty through his mother Esyllt, the daughter of King Cynan (d. after 816), rather than through his father Gwriad ap Elidyr. [3] As Merfyn's father's origins are obscure, so is the basis of his claim to the throne; it is not known whether Merfyn came to the throne through usyurpation or prior arrangement. While Lloyd's article on Merfyn in the Dictionary of National Biography suggests that kingship claims through a maternal life were sometimes recognized under Welsh law of inheritance, those laws refer to property, not kingship. Stewart Baldwin/1025 shows the wife of Rhodri Mawr as unknown. Angharad ferch Meurig is first mentioned in JC 20-1`, a 16th century manuscript and is considered a late invention.

Since Angharad probably never existed, the supposed line of descent from the kings of Ceredigion which has been traced through her is probably not valid.
