Contents

Bell and Beall

While the name was generally spelled Beall in Maryland, it was most often spelled Bell in Scotland.

Ninian Beall

Because of the prominence of Colonel Ninian Beall in Maryland colonial history, a number of attempts have been made to trace his ancestry, and that of other early Maryland Bealls, back to Scotland.

The results have been a combination of documented fact, embellishments, and outright fiction. Each of the Scottish Bell ancestors of Maryland Bealls in one way or another has become part of the legend, in which there is a special need to separate fact from fiction.

Dr. James Beall and Anne Marie Calvert

Many personal genealogies found on the internet show Dr. James Beall and his wife Anne Marie Calvert as major ancestors of most Bealls in Maryland. Unfortunately, no documented facts have been found for either the life events, the children, or even the existence of these two persons.

James Beall and Helen Pringle

Mike Marshall shows Thomas Beall born 2 Jan 1630/31 in Largo, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of James Beall, born 1603 in Largo, and his wife Helen Pringle, born before 1615. [1]

In doing so, Marshall cites an earlier version of Fredric Z. Saunders' Beall website showing that Thomas Bell, baptized at St. Andrews, was the son of James Bell (b. 1603) and Helen Pringle. However, this information is no longer on Saunders' website in 2020. [2]

Janet Beall Broadbent has him the son of James Bell and Helen Pringle [3] and d. after Oct 4, 1732. Major research on Thomas Beall and son Ninian Jr/Sr has been done by Janet Beall Broadbent, letter of 1 June 1994, reported in Beall Genealogical News:131-145 (1994) and 298-300 (1996).
