The Lewerenz Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Lewerenz name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Lewerenz name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Lewerenzes), by time period (18th Century Lewerenzes), or by topic ( Lewerenz DNA, Lewerenz Occupations, Lewerenz Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Goals
The purpose of the Lewerenz Name Study is to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.
The main objectives are:
- Find out how rare or common the Lewerenz surname is
- Identify where the surname originated from
Name Origin and Meaning
The name probably comes from East Prussia; it means Prussian-Lithuanian "leveris" = the run-down, the neglected, the scribbler. But it could also be a nickname derived from Lorenz, Laurentius.[1][2][3] Since the name Lewerenz is most common in northern Germany, with a clear focus on Mecklenburg, where my ancestors also come from, I assume that at least for me the first meaning is the correct one.

(Status: January 20, 2021) Lewerenz is the 147,032nd most common name in the world and the 4,189th most common name in Germany.[4]
The highest concentration of the name Lewerenz is found in Germany in Mecklenburg, in the USA in Minnesota.[5][6]
