Lewis County History
Lewis County was established on December 23, 1843. Territory was taken from parts of Hickman, Lawrence, Maury, Perry, and Wayne counties. It was named for explorer Meriwether Lewis.

Lewis County is part of Middle Tennessee, one of Tennessee's Three Grand Divisions. These divisions are not only geographic, but also cultural and defined in state law. Lewis County is also part of the South Central Region of Appalachia.
