Origin

Ligocki

Ligocki (feminine Ligocka) is a Polish surname. The "Dictionary of American Family Names" describes the origin as:

Habitational name for someone from any of numerous places in Poland called Ligota, denoting a settlement that was exempt from paying tribute.[1]

Wikipedia lists 8 villages in Poland named Ligota and many others which have compound names including Ligota.

Ligowski

Ligowski (feminine Ligowska) is a similar Polish surname which seems to be a habitational name for someone from Ligowo a village on the border of Masovian & Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships.

I've noticed that some people living in Płonkowo parish around 1800 are listed with surnames both Ligowski and Ligocki in different documents. So it is possible that some Ligockis may have been from families that were originally Ligowski (especially in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship where it seems there were no villages named Ligota).

Legocki

Legocki and Legoski are variant spellings seen for example in Sheridan, Wyoming.
