Primary Sources for New Jersey

Vital Records (1848-present)

Marriages (pre-1848)

There is no comprehensive compilation of pre-1848 marriages performed in New Jersey. A number of transcriptions of marriage records (whether from the county courthouse or a church) have been compiled and published in print, they are listed under each county below (not comprehensive yet). Aside from private Bible records, marriage records for this period will be either

  1. State of New Jersey License (bond)
  2. County License or Justice of the Peace Docket
  3. Religious

State-Issued Marriage Bonds aka Licenses (1665-1799)

  • The most accurate source for state-issued bonds/licenses is the NJSA database Colonial Marriage Bonds, 1665-1799. Copies of the originals sometimes include parents and other additional information not indexed, and can be ordered from the State Archives from this search page.
  • The earliest printed compilation of these state marriage bonds/licenses is found in Volume 22 of the Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey. This book begins with a useful chapter on "The Early Marriage Laws of New Jersey, and the Influences Bearing upon their Formation" by William Nelson. It is followed by an imperfect transcription of the marriage bonds in the Archives, followed by records of a handful of Dutch Reformed, Baptist, and Quaker religious institutions.
  • The GMNJ published a series of articles containing new accurate transcriptions of all the original marriage bonds in the State Archives (correcting errors and omissions in the printed volume 22 of Documents), and over its run has published many collections of miscellaneous marriage records by county. For citations, download the PDF titled "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey—Article Titles and Authors by Volume, Issue, Date, and Page" from GMNJ's website.

Marriage Records in Justice of the Peace Dockets

There is no comprehensive collection or New Jersey marriage records performed by Justices of the Peace. Each individual JP had his own minute book in which he recorded details of Small Causes cases he tried (without a jury) and marriages he performed. Not all minute books survived; some are retained by the county and some by the State Archives; there are possibly some in other local collections? "The State Archives encourages county and municipal governments to establish their own archival facilities in order to protect their permanent records locally. However, at present such programs are not consistently in place locally." So some records can be found in Trenton, some in each county clerk's office or municipal archives.

Divorce (1743-1886)

Divorce was extremely rare. Divorces needed to be made law by an act of the Legislature or were heard in Chancery Court.

  • The Index to the Acts of the Legislature (1663-1877) includes the citation for completed divorces pages 294-299. You can then look up the act of divorce in the Session Laws (aka Acts).

If you want to get more detail, you can follow the progression of the bill of divorce (which sometimes has more detail and possibly could fail) in the Senate (or Legislative Council as it was formerly known) Journal, and then in the Assembly, where it would be then passed back to the Senate and on to the Governor for signature, making it law. Curiously, you can also see which Senators/Assembly members voted for and against the act of divorce! Unfortunately, the Minutes don't include what was said in the Legislature, just the outcome of the review.

All are public domain. There are indices at the end of each volume, and an index for the entire series was also published. Tip: use the indexes in the digitized volume for every mention of a person in wills; Ancestry's indexing does not include every name in the print index, it seems to only cover the deceased and not necessarily all witnesses and people named in the will. The indices are not perfect and sometimes you will find individuals by keyword search that were not indexed.

County Courts

Be mindful that New Jersey's county boundaries made multiple dramatic changes. County court records stay with the original county. Search the boundary changes for your location of interest to determine which county's records you need.

  • New Jersey Probate Records, 1678-1980 collection on FamilySearch includes many court records besides probate but as of 2021 does not appear to be comprehensive. Records are arranged by county and are not yet indexed. Quality varies; this is a digitization of microfilm created some time ago, therefore images are not high resolution, and interpreting handwriting is sometimes laborious. There is not (yet) an index you can search.
  • New Jersey State Archives: Copies of all county court records are held on microfilm at the State Archives. To see what's available and the time period covered, browse their catalog. Ratables (1772-1822)

See the article "Using Ratables for New Jersey Genealogy."

There are no extant federal census returns for New Jersey from 1790-1830. Researchers of this period often rely on "ratables" i.e. "tax lists" as a census substitute. The State Archives has microfilmed all extant ratables (only an estimated 10% of all tax lists exist).

There are several published transcriptions or compilations of tax lists.

  • Jackson, Ronald Vern, ed. New Jersey Tax Lists, 1772-1822. five volumes. American Tax List Indices. (Salt Lake City, Utah: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1981). This work is an alphabetical index of taxpayers and includes the taxpayer's name, town, county, and date they appeared on the tax list. It is available in print at libraries or as part of Ancestry's database New Jersey, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1643-1890.
  • Stryker-Rodda, Kenn (comp.) Revolutionary Census of New Jersey: An Index, Based on Ratables, of the Inhabitants of New Jersey during the Period of the American Revolution. (Lambertville, NJ: Hunterdon House, 1986). This index groups individuals by last name from three periods of ratables: 1773-1774, 1778-1780, and 1784-1786. It includes their name and township. A "code" indicates which issue of GMNJ contains the transcription of the original.
  • The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey published transcriptions of the ratables included in the Revolutionary Census of New Jersey. The Revolutionary Census includes the citations for the issue in which each ratable list is published. Each ratable list is published from the original list of taxpayers in the town. This complements the alphabetical indexes and it is often helpful to see all residents of a township at the same time. These typically include tax payer's name, acreage, and number of servants/slaves.
  • Norton, James S. New Jersey in 1793: An Abstract and Index to the 1793 Militia Census of the State of New Jersey. (Salt Lake City, Utah, 1973). A transcription of ratables created as a result of an NJ Law of 30 Nov 1792 "to take a list of all and every free and able-bodied white male Citizen, between the ages of eighteen and forty-five Years." Those who did not serve and paid a $3 tax, as well as certain occupations, are listed as "exempt." There are no extant 1793 ratables from Bergen, Cape May, Salem, and Somerset, but a list of these men was reconstructed.

Federal Census (1830-1950)

Federal census returns for New Jersey conducted from 1790-1820 are lost. The first available federal census return for New Jersey is 1830 (see below for two exceptions). Statistics and some demographics exist but not the enumeration of names. The 1890 census is lost nationwide, except for the veterans schedule and partial coverage of Jersey City, Hudson County.

Federal Nonpopulation Schedules for New Jersey

New Jersey has only a couple nonpopulations schedules of interest to genealogists. See Federal Census website for more details on other States.

Cumberland County, 1800

An original census return was retained by the enumerator (William Belford Ewing) and located in an archive. The manuscript was transcribed and published in the GMNJ in five parts. Cramer, Marjorie K. (comp.) "US 1800 Census, Cumberland County." The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey.

Finding newspapers on microfilm

  • U.S. Newspaper Directory, 1690-Present catalogues almost 2000 newspapers published in New Jersey; in some cases the record lists institutions with the microfilm. Published by the Library of Congress.
  • Many local libraries and historical societies have their local newspapers on microfilm and in some cases this is not reflected in the U.S. Newspaper Directory. It is out of date, but you can consult The Directory of New Jersey newspapers, 1765-1970, published by the New Jersey Historical Commission in 1975. This work reflected newspaper holdings in 1975, so cannot be relied upon, but is a great resource for determining what might be out there. There is at this point no current, comprehensive catalog of newspaper collections on microfilm, so you will need to contact institutions in your area of interest to determine what's available now.

Bible Records

  • The Genealogical Society of New Jersey has an extensive collection and accept donations. See their Bible and Family Records Collection index.
  • The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey regularly publishes transcribed primary sources. Their compilation Genealogies of New Jersey Families is an easy way to access them. You can also find them as originally published using the GMNJ index titled "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey—Article Titles and Authors by Volume, Issue, Date, and Page" linked on their GMNJ website.
  • Many New Jersey historical societies (for example, Salem County Historical Society and Gloucester County Historical Society) have collections of Bibles and have printed transcriptions in their journals, books, and other compilations.
  • Several compilations of Bible records are linked below under their county.

Genealogical and Historical Societies

These societies can be a great source of original genealogical research. Some also publish old documents that can be hard to find or unavailable to the average researcher.

This list only includes Societies that have publications free on the internet. Most are free because they are no longer in copyright. No recent history or genealogy will be found here. There is no organization to the list. These and other sources are grouped by location here.

If you find a new society, please simply add it to the top of the list. If you are familiar with the tags and Categories used on WikiTree please add those to the page for each source. This will make it easier for others to find these sources.

Hi Rick,

This is an amazing resource for us. Thanks for all your work to maintain these and the many other space pages!

I had a question on the expected formatting we are seeing on this page. If you go to the ToC and scroll down to the Connecticut entry, you just see the top-level heading for the Connecticut space page. Then when you select it to go to that area, you see all the non-heading entries for the entire space page. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:List_of_Lists#Sources_For_The_State_of_Connecticut

I see in the individual space pages we are Transcluding these pages to this one page and using the <noinclude></noinclude> tags to exclude certain content on this page. What I am finding is that many of the space pages are using the <noinclude></noinclude> tags inconsistently, probably from many people not understanding what those tags are trying to do.

Other pages are formatted with a different use of the <noinclude></noinclude> tags and it certainly makes the view on this page different for them, and I don't believe that is the intent.

If you can help me understand the desired view on this page when a space page is transcluded here, I have significant experience with Wikimedia template coding and I can help fix the space pages that have fallen out of sync with our intent, so as to get us back on track.

Thanks

Kent Smith

Kent,

In the beginning, I tried many things to organize sources on WikiTree. This is one of those pages. Now, many years later, I don't use this page. It has become too large and cumbersome. If there are errors in this page, or in the methods this page uses, I wouldn't know about it. If you see errors in this page, please feel free to fix them, even if the errors are in the transcluded pages.

Instead, I use this page: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Category-Source

I use this page every day, multiple times a day, so I bookmarked it in my web browser.

Understood. I’m thinking the purpose of this page is to show the main headings of each linked page, but I agree, the other layout is probably more usable.

Would it make sense to add an entry at the top of this page linking to the other page you mentioned for those who don’t know this page isn’t really being maintained any more?

I’ll review some of the linked pages to see what is the typical format and look at updating the other pages to follow that same heading and include tags to see if it would be easy enough to fix the issues, unless it would just end up creating a duplicate of the other page you noted.

Kent,

I've add a note at the top of this page, just as you suggested. Please add, correct, or change, anything on this page that you think will be helpful to you or others.

Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick,

Can you remove this from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Reliable_Sources_for_Pre-1700_Profiles ?

It currently appears in the category as "List of Lists" and its role there is unclear. Help pages point to that category as where to find the lists of sources that projects managing pre-1700 profiles consider to be reliable.

Thanks,

Chris

I can see that this list is quite extensive. Do you have any tips for new users on how it is organized? Why do you seem to have chosen not to include a table of contents?

This is an automatically generated page. (Edit this page to see what I mean.) The table of contents, and the page most people use, is here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Category-Source I bookmark this link so I have easy access to it.

Azure, I've put the other sources on the appropriate State Source page as "External Links", so they won't show up on the list to the left.

I've added "A Wallen-Walling Genealogy" to the list.

Hi Rick!

The Wallen/Walling is free as well. A free account on archive.org to check it out as a digital library loan. More free resources:

Azure, Thank you for posting these sources. The Robinson book is the only one available for free online, so I've added it to this list.
