Questions needed to be answered before proposal is made public:
- Do we want/need structure in both English and Icelandic languages?
- Would a kaupstaðir also be within the geographical area of the sýslur? Would there be more than one parish in a kaupstaðir? Example, in Göteborg where I live there are multiple parishes but they are still listed in church books as "parish name, county name"
- Is there any online resource that list all sókn of a specific sýsla?
Proposal of Location Category Structure for Iceland
Iceland was historically divided into 23 counties, sýslur and 23 independent towns, kaupstaðir. While counties are no longer administrative units in Iceland, the name is still used to refer to the area. The Icelandic census records are organised by using parish and county which is the structure we also suggest to be used for Icelandic categories.
This is an example of the proposed location structure in English;
- English language structure:
- [[Category: Country]]
- [[Category: Country, Counties]]
- [[Category: Name County, Country]]
- [[Category: Parish name, Name County]]
- [[Category: Name County, Country]]
- [[Category: Country, Counties]]
- This is an actual example;
- [[Category: Iceland]]
- [[Category: Iceland, Counties]]
- [[Category: Árnessýsla County]]
- [[Category: Strandarsókn, Árnessýsla County]]
- [[Category: Árnessýsla County]]
- [[Category: Iceland, Counties]]
