History and Meaning of the "Machell" name

One of the earliest Machells on record was Halthe le Machel, latinised Halthe Malus Catulus.

Malus: bad
Catulus: cub, kitten, puppy, whelp, hound

The name could, therefore, mean "Bad Whelp" or similar

Halthe was thought to be the son of "Catulus de Castro Catulino"

Catulus : cub, kitten, puppy, whelp, hound
de Castro: a fortification
Catulino: little dog

The Early Machell Pedigree(s)

Three sources that provide useful detail about the early pedigree of Machell include:

  • William Whelan's book, "The History and Topography of the Counties of Cumberland and Westmorland"
  • The book "Annales Caermoelenses", or, Annals of Cartmel, by James Stockdale
  • Bellasis, the Lancaster Herald's book, "The Machells of Crackenthorpe"

However, there are discrepancies between these proposed early pedigrees.

Without access to documentation providing the necessary proofs, it is not possible to be certain of the true lineage of the very early Machells. For the purpose of creating Wikitree profiles therefore, in this name study, the Bellasis pedigree has been used. This is because most of the Machells referred to his book, also have supporting records in Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch, and other genealogical resources; especially from Guy Machell 1400's, down to 1900.

Should earlier records come to light, these existing Wikitree profiles can be corrected as necessary.

About the Project

The Machell Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Machell name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Machell name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Machell's), by time period (18th Century Machell's), or by topic (Machell DNA, Machell Occupations, Machell Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Current Focus

Efforts are currently focussed on the creation of profiles, to build tree branches.

The initial focus is on English profiles and branches, because of the wealth of information left by Edward Bellasis, Lancaster Herald; especially his work on the Machells of Crackenthorpe, and the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society.

Once branches have been created, the profiles will be worked on and, as far as practicable / possible, completed and linked.

Global Machell profiles and branches will be created as candidates in countries around the world are identified.
