Biography

Christopher Stapleton[1][2]

Robert Stapleton, Knt., of Wighill, Yorkshire, was the eldest surviving son and heir of Christopher Stapleton, Esq., and his first wife Alice Ask. He was born about 1515 in Yorkshire; this is estimated due to his marriage in 1537.[2]
Robert Stapleton married Elizabeth Mallory, daughter of William Mallory, Knt., of Studley, Yorkshire, and his wife Jane, daughter of John Norton, Knt. [1]
Robert died on June 6, 1557 at the age of 40.[1] He was buried at Wighill, Harrogate Borough, North Yorkshire, England[3]
The widow Elizabeth married as her second husband, Marmaduke Slingsby.[4]

Robert Stapleton and his wife Katherine Constable had two sons and two daughters:[1]
  • Henry Stapleton, Esq., of Wighill.
  • Philip Stapleton, Gent., of Bilton.
  • Jane Stapleton, married Christopher Wyvill, Esq., who died before his father, eldest son of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill of Constable Burton, the first baronet. She was living with her mother-in-law, Lady Anne Wyvill, at Massam in 1604, a Catholic.
  • Dorothy Stapleton.
