Location: County Fermanagh, Ireland
Surname/tag: Maguire
John Francis Maguire was my Grandfather. Finding out where he was born has taken years, and been an arduous task.
He never met my father, he disappeared shortly after my father was born. On my father's Birth Certificate his father is a Private in the Royal Warks regiment, and his occupation is a 'Metal Dipper'
I knew that the Military Police searched the house in which my grandmother and father were living at the time, with her parents in Washwood Heath, Birmingham. (This was next door to my father's aunt and uncle - as my great uncle was in a reserved occupation, the MPs whipped him off with them, despite the fact that my Uncle was well over 6ft in height, whereas my grandfather was about 5'6" according to the only photo I've seen of him..! My grand mother re-married, and there almost no documentation to prove that her first husband even existed.
He was on the 1939 Register, living near to Fort Dunlop and Jaguar, and as that is where the area in which my grandmother worked, presumably where they met. On the 1939 register he is living in Paget Road, Birmingham, and born on the 17th July, 1912. When I sent off for my grandparents Marriage Certificate, he is living in 2 Paget Road, no doubt that this was the same person. However, there was no father on there. So once I was certain of his date of birth, after establishing the links, I searched the Irish Genealogy online and found him immediately! In the Enniskillen Workhouse Birth Records he is John Maguire, born on the 17th July 1912. His mother was an unmarried servant named Elizabeth Maguire, hence the absence of a father on his Marriage Certificate. I have a copy of his Birth Certificate, which corresponds and matches everything together.
