My husband's grandfather was believed to have been adopted and his entire life he believed the Main name was the name of the adopted parent, but I discovered a birth certificate and census record which suggests that Main was his true name and he was raised by a man named "White" after his mother died in a bar fight (or so the family story goes), but I found no indication that he was actually adopted.

So the mystery is... Was James Henry Main (1918 - 1989) his birth name or adopted name?
