Maine Coast Guard Companies in the Civil War

The state of Maine organized seven companies of infantry in the Union Army to guard the Maine Coast during the American Civil War, although two of its companies were stationed along the Maryland Coast. Very little is known about the command structure of these companies, beyond their commanding officers at the rank of captain. Over 800 men served in the seven companies.
Company A mustered in at Belfast, Maine on March 18, 1864. It was stationed at Fort Washington, Maryland and commanded by Captain Charles Barker. The entire company was mustered out May 25, 1865.
Company B mustered in at Augusta, Maine on April 27, 1864. It was stationed at Fort Foote, Maryland and commanded by Captain Oliver J Conant. The company was mustered out on June 24, 1865.
Company C mustered in at Eastport Maine on May 16, 1864. It was stationed at Fort Sullivan, in Eastport, Maine and commanded by Captain Thomas P. Hutchinson. The company was mustered out on September 6, 1865.
Company D mustered in at Augusta, Maine on January 6, 1865. It was stationed at Machiasport, Maine and commanded by Captain Charles F. King. The company mustered out on September 6, 1865.
Company E mustered in at Augusta Maine on January 7, 1865. It was stationed at Rockland, Maine and commanded by Captain Dumont Bunker and Captain James L. Hunt. It mustered out on July 7, 1865.
Company F mustered in at Augusta, Maine on January 6, 1865. It was stationed at Belfast, Maine and commanded by Captain Charles H. Conant.
Company G mustered in on March 1, 1865. It was stationed at Calais, Maine and commanded by Captain Winslow Roberts. It mustered out on July 6, 1865.
