Old Mains of Cushnie, 18th century. Three fine stone dormer heads, dripping eaves and graduated slates distinguish this two-storey, harl-pointed rubble house, which is augmented by the coat of arms of Alexander Lumsden of Cushnie (1645-1714), whose family owned Cushnie from 1470 to 1876. Altered 1973-5.[2]
The 1841 census shows Harry Gray and his family living at the Mains of Cushnie, 18 people in total.[3] The baptism record for daughter Catharine in 1819 indicates that Harry Gray and family were there as early as then. Records indicate that the Gray's were at the Mains of Cushnie until at least 1862 when Janet Gray (nee Forbes) passed away. The 1871 census shows John Ellis and family in residence at Mains of Cushnie.
See the lower left bottom of this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/228775612 for where it was located in the 1800s. It's former location is now described as The Coach House on modern maps.
