This research project is a subset of Lewis Men of Early New England and the Lewis Name Study. Suggestions for improvement are welcomed.

Edmond Lewes (abt.1601-abt.1650) and his descendants have been researched extensively and well-documented. Like any early line, that doesn't mean the documented paper trails are free of errors. Several WikiTree members have done exemplary work in incorporating this information into WikiTree, yet there is always more to be done.

We focus on male-line descendants because only sons inherit their father's Y-chromosome. Our goal is to use Y-DNA test results to provide supporting, or contradictory, evidence to early paper trails (beyond the reach of autosomal DNA testing).

Initial Y-DNA Hypothesis

WikiTree member Michael Lewis traces his ancestry to Edmond (Edmond->Thomas->Samuel->Thomas->Zephaniah->Jonathan). His Y-37 test, FTDNA kit# 143104, is included in a large grouping in the Lewis surname project at FTDNA, labeled in Apr 2023 as "Haplogroup R1b - Group 10." The group at this time contains 23 matching members, including 18 with surname "Lewis."

Male-line Descendant Profiles on WikiTree

Please remember several caveats:

  • All of these lines and statistics are based on profiles present in WikiTree as of 14 Apr 2023.
  • Many lines are incomplete; some may include errors (including transcription errors introduced here).
  • "One son" means one son is profiled on WikiTree, not necessarily that there was only one son.
  • "Stub" means there isn't sufficient information in the profile to document sons.
  • With Edmond as generation 1, this project extends to generation 6. Autosomal DNA tests should begin to provide information for generation 6 and beyond.

Edmond Lewes (abt.1601-abt.1650): 6 sons; Y-37
