In 1790, Nathaniel Massie decided to create a settlement in Manchester, Ohio. He drew up a two year contract for himself and the others who would join the colony that they settle and defend the area. Besides Massie, those that signed the contract were John Lindsey, William Wade, John Black, Samuel Smith, Jesse Wethington, Josiah Wade, John Clark, Robert Ellison, Zephania Wade, John Ellison, Allen Simmeral, John McCutchen, Andrew Anderson, Mathew Hart, Henry Nelson, John Peter Christopher Shanks, James Allison, Thomas Stout, and George Wade. The settlement was begun immediately after and the town, named Manchester, was laid out into lots. By March of 1791, the town was built and fortified and then they set to planting crops.
