Mapping the Extended Hoyle Family
Through Census Records

The earliest Hoyl (Johann Peiter Heÿl, born c1705) apparently landed in Pennsylvania and initially settled there (baptismal records for some of his children are found in Lancaster County and York County, Pennsylvania) before he moved to North Carolina, where he died c1762.[1] By the 1850s, many of the North Carolina descendants had moved to Georgia, along with descendants of the Hoyle branch who had moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. The genealogy of Peiter Heyl..., published in 1938 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hoyle Rucker (1872-1950), covers the people being mapped here (see full citation below). The profile of Peiter includes a discussion of concerns with the early genealogy as presented by Mrs. Rucker, although for the 1850s families, her information appears to be fairly reliable. Children of "Pioneer Peiter" - Johann Peter (Heÿl) Hoyle (abt.1705-abt.1762):

  1. Johann Jacob Heÿl (1731-abt.1763), married Elizabeth (Unknown) Costner (abt.1738-1779)
  2. Elizabetha Catharina (Heyl) Bosch (1733-1792), married Jerg Sebastian (Bosch) Best Jr. (abt.1723-1809)
  3. Maria Sara Heyl (1734-)
  4. Anna Maria (Heyl) Whittenberg (1736-)
  5. Michael Heyl (abt.1738-1793), Margaretha (Unknown) Hoyle (1745-1827)
  6. John Hoyle (abt.1740-abt.1822), married Margaret Rebecca (Costner) Hoyle (1745-1799)
  7. Anna Elisabetha (Hoyle) Hovis, married George B. Hovis Sr (abt.1740-bef.1807)
  8. Andrew Heÿl (1749-aft.1806)

As of 13 March 2023, the focus of the research on this page is on Adam and John, sons of Peiter's son John, DAR Patriot Ancestor #A058888 (although information from other branches can be found here too).

DAR Notes/Leads

DAR descendant records are not considered reliable but they are good for leads. The main records are more reliable, as they have been reviewed against current DAR requirements. The main records include multiple entries for children - each entry represents a person who has joined the Daughters of the American Revolution through that child. Adam is listed 14 times in the main record of DAR Patriot Ancestor John Hoyle. Seven spell his wife's name with a C and seven with a K (one of which is Katharine instead of Katherine).[20]

  1. John Hoyl (born 1740), married Margaret Costner in 1763[20]
  2. Adam Hoyl (born 1779), married Katherine Fite in 1807[20]
    1. Margaret H. Hoyl (born 1810), married Thomas Hardaway Jones in 1828[21][22][23][24]
    2. Mary Augusta Hoyl, (born 1812), married John Harriet Dabbs (1805-1879) in 1829[25][26]
    3. Sarah E. Hoyle (born 1815), married Barnett Smith Hardeman in 1834[27][28][29]
    4. Peter Jones (born 1817), married Margaret Kirkpatrick in 1838[30][31]
One descendent record, a short form, is for a descendant of Adam and Katherine, but through which child is not indicated.[32]

Susannah Hovis (x3) - Comparing Rucker & WikiTree

From Susannah (Hovis) Rudisill (abt.1797-) - copied in 13 March 2023. Susannah married David Rudicel - David (Rudisaile) Rudisill (1797-) - on 20 June 1818 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.[33]

Looking for the connection between these Rudisill & Hovis folks & the Hoyl family that I've been working on... I think I figured it out. I was confusing two Susannah Hovises who were aunt & neice:

Part of the problem is the WikiTree profiles (listed below) have different dates than what's given in Elizabeth Hoyle Rucker's 1938 book on the descendants of Peiter Heyl,[34] which is what the following reflects.

Rucker
