Hello. My maternal line was Marshall. Some research and the help of a French genealogist revealed that the Marshall's had changed their name upon arrival here in the USA from Marsal. Charles Marsal (Marshall) arrived in the US from Alsace, France about 1853 in NY. He appeared to have been involved in the Civil War and settled in the Fayette/Waterloo area of Upstate NY. In the 1860 census of Fayette, NY he is listed as a cooper (barrel maker). His wife was Frances Schantz. His family had several generations of running a successful cooperage in Waterloo until the advent of Prohibition. The area of Wingen is near the German border and has changed hands with France several times. If you have any information re: the Marsal line, please drop me a line at my email address charlesmkeenan1@yahoo.com Thanks
