Martha Lockhart is reported as born about 1773 in Virginia, British Colonies. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Her parents are unknown. [5]

Research Notes 1790, pre-marriage

In 1790, prior to her 1793 marriage, Martha could have been in the household of Robert Lockhart (in Henry County, 1790 Personal Taxes, June 11). [6]

She was not listed in the 1791 proven Will of John Lockhart (of Henry County) who had listed a Martha Dodson, because she was not Martha Dodson yet. [7]

Other counties, aside from Henry, which bordered Patrick County: Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, in Virginia, plus Stokes and Surry, in North Carolina. Were there any 'Lockharts' in those counties? [8] [9]

She married George Dodson 8 Apr 1793 in Patrick County, Virginia, USA. [10]

In 1800, Martha is located with her husband: George (son of George), on the 'Personal Tax List B' for Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Also, George Dodson Rev. (and another George Dodson Exempt). [11] [12]

Sometime after 1800, they moved into Kentucky. [13]

Martha and George are listed in the 1820 census for Wayne County, Kentucky. with nine children in their household. Wayne County is supported by Circumstantial Evidence, where ----- is on the same census, different page. [14] [15] [16]

From Wayne County, Kentucky, they moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, and in 1830 had 3 children living with them. Other members of their family, then adults, were in the same location. [17]

Martha's husband, George, in 1835, purchased 40 acres of land, in Boone County, Indiana, on Oct 15, 1835. [18]

In 1840, George and Martha were on the Boone County, Indiana, census, with 4 children in their household (including one or more grandchildren). [19]

In 1846, Martha became a widow and in 1850, she was living with her son, Ruel, in Vermillon County, Illinois. [20] [21]

She died between the 1850 census and 1860. A Memorial Stone for her has not been located.

Research Notes

-- Martha Lockhart was an mtDNA ancestress in our maternal line.
-- As Martha Lockhart Dodson, who married George Dodson 8 Apr 1793 in Patrick County, Virginia, USA, she could not have been the daughter listed as Martha Dodson in the Will of Thomas Lockhart (dated 24th November 1790 and proved in court on the 30th of May 1791).
-- Circumstantial Evidence: None of the descendants of Martha's daugher, Nancy, were named Thomas. The Thomas reported as brother of Nancy is unsourced.
-- Martha Lockhart's daughter, Nancy Dodson Davenport, is listed as a DAR descendant of George Dodson RWS, through his son, George Dodson (husband of Martha). That was how we were able to identify which of the many George Dodsons (on WikiTree) from whom we descend.
-- This profile is the "cleaned-up" and sourced version of Martha.
