Biography

John Burnett was born in October of 1876 in Patrick County, Virginia. The third son of Martha A. Burnett, he never knew his father. John married Orpha McGrady March 12, 1896 in Carroll County, Virginia and together they had 8 children. He died in November 1937 after being struck by a delivery truck while walking under the Blue Ridge Parkway overpass on Hwy 58 Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
John's second son, Madison Burnette was born in Smith River Township February 1, 1904. Mat was well known in Meadows of Dan for his witty stories and whittled toys. Mat married Ella Smith in November of 1926 and together they had 3 sons, Arlie, Kenny, and Glenn.
In October of 2016, Arlie Burnette was given a 67 marker Y-DNA test, MT-DNA test, and AU-DNA test through FTDNA, in hopes of determining the identity of his Great Grandfather, the father of John Burnett. According to comparisons made with other FTDNA Y-DNA test takers, (see charts below) it appears John's father was or was carrying the Y gene of the Bowman family of Patrick County, Virginia.
With the data and resources being compiled on this page, I am trying to narrow down the exact identity of that Bowman Y-gene carrier. Any feedback/assistance is welcome! Please check back often as this is a work-in-progress and updates are being made constantly. - Phillip Rich 07:49, 30 December 2016 (EST)

Local Lore

Of course, Meadows of Dan, Elamsville, Dan River Township, Mayberry, we're talking "Small Town America" here. And one thing that hasn't changed in every Small Town, is the propensity to Gossip. What story could be more juicy than the Grandmother of a small town family having 4+/- illegitimate children without ever getting married?!? So, as you can imagine, this question of John Burnett's Paternity has drawn it's fair share of whispers in the Patrick County Gossip Mill. Some of those stories give us interesting possible candidates and we can't possibly call this research complete without taking a closer look at:

(Below you will find a compilation of unsubstantiated rumors and personal musings. This section is for "Lore", Rumors if you will, and there is no intention of implying any of it is based in fact, and certainly no intention of defamation or hurt feelings. Proceed with caution!)

  • Reuben Terry
    • According to the stories, Reuben Terry was John's Father Figure, whether he transferred the Y gene or not. He was called Uncle Rube. And apparently took John under his wing and spent a good deal of time with him through the 1890s. But looking at his records, I see little reason to believe he was more than just a good guy who took a liking to a fatherless child. He has no clear connection to the Bowmans, was married and had a couple children that died at birth or shortly thereafter, was notably older than Martha, and seems to have come into the equation after John birth rather than beforehand. I get the impression his wife may have been suffering physically and he emotionally from the effects of failed efforts at childbirth. His wife passed away in 1898, and Uncle Rube remarried to a younger wife, and seems to have drifted away from John and Martha at that point.
  • Fleming Spangler
    • This story shows some real potential. It seems Fleming went away to battle in the Civil War and recieved some sort of head injury that left him "not quite right" for the rest of his life. He married Mary Ellen Spangler and lived in the home of her parents in Elamsville 2 doors down from the house that Henry and Mary Burnett had moved to between 1860 and 1870. According to the stories, this was Martha's home with her sister after Henry died, and the place where John was born. Fleming had a known association with Martha and was known to do various repairs around her house and (actually) cut and chop wood to fill her woodshed. His younger brother Joseph married Martha's sister Mary, and they named their first son Abram. There does seem to be a history between the Spanglers and the Bowmans, including a George Washington Spangler who married Malinda Bowman Spangler widow of Pvt Daniel Spangler, Civil War casualty. Malinda was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Lewis) Bowman.
  • John Stanley
    • Then there's John Stanley... my impression from his story is that the main reasons he is a suspect is because he wasn't a very good husband, his name is John, and because it makes a really juicy morsel when you realize Arlie married his GGrand-Daughter Helen Stanley. He was apparently into some sort of sales that required housecalls. Was known to have a fondness for the local "Mountain Water", and would frequently go missing for a couple days at a time. It was just assumed that he was shacking up with another lonely housewife or widow and he'd head back home when her medicinal mason jar went dry, or her matress got cold. I've researched the Stanleys pretty thoroughly, and there's no reason to question John Stanley's Paternity, and little reason to believe he even knew Martha, much less sired a son with her. It appears the biggest thing he was guilty of is being disliked. I've got Helen and Arlies Autosomnal DNA tests uploaded to GEDMATCH and should be able to officially rule John Stanley in or out with some triangulated comparisons.

Notes from Byron Lee Bowman

  • Email Date: 12/16/16
    • Subject: Y-DNA Match

"Phillip, all of the data I have found in the 10 years I have been searching the records for Patrick County and Carroll County Bowmans is consistent with them all being descended from Robert Bowman 1728-1792 who moved in 1777 from Surry County, NC to the part of Henry County that became Patrick County in 1790. From those records I have concluded that Robert had the following sons;"

  1. Peter c1753-1808,
  2. Robert JR c1755-bef1824,
  3. John 1759-1843,
  4. Isham c1762,
  5. Leonard 1766-aft1840, and
  6. Aaron 1769-bef1853.
  • Peter settled on Squirrel Creek at the foot of Squirrel Spur.
  • Robert and John settled on top of the Blue Ridge at the junction of Bell Spur and Squirrel Spur in the area where Bell Spur Church is located today.
  • Isham moved to Wilkes Co., NC and then to Washington Co., VA.
  • Leonard and his son John bef 1787-1849 settled on Sun Run a feeder stream of the Ararat River, and
    •          Leonard’s Son John was my ggg-grandfather.
  • Aaron settled a little farther up the Ararat, just over the foot of Squirrel Spur west of Peter Bowman.

The Aaron Bowman c1837 who was listed in the 1860 census in the next household after the Burnett’s household, was the son of Thonton Bowman, apparently the son of Aaron 1769.

I will be glad to try to answer any questions about the Bowmans that you have,  Phillip.

- Byron Bowman

I have not been able to establish one, way or the other, whether my Bowman ancestors connect to these Bowmans. I think that Aaron, the father of this family, was the son of Thornton who, I think, was the son of Aaron Bowman b 1770.

My father was Charlie Lee Jefferson Bowman b 1916 in Surry County NC, his father was Thomas Jefferson Bowman b 1884 in Patrick County VA, his father was John C. Bowman b 1850 in Patrick County VA, his father was Cleron Bowman b 1809 in Patrick County VA, his father was John Bowman b about 1783.

I'm stuck at this generation.

- Byron

I submitted my DNA for analysis, and my results are posted on at FTDNA Link (Group Administrator: Henry Bowman hbowman-at-***.net)

Recently, a descendent of Thornton Bowman b. c1800 (who married Judith Sawyers in 1827) posted DNA results on Ancestry.com that matched mine in all 33 alleles that he had tested.

I think that this means that Thornton b. c1800 and John Bowman b. c1783 (my ancestor who married Mary Beller) have an 80+% probability of sharing an ancestor in the previous generation. They lived in the same neighborhood of Patrick County VA in 1830s & 1840s.

I believe that John Bowman was the son of Leonard Bowman b. c1760, and the grandson of Royal Bowman b. c1735. Therefore, I would love to have any Bowman male who can trace their line back to Royal Bowman or to his brother John Sutton Bowman.

I urge any Bowman male to submit your DNA - especially if you fit the description above!

Here, briefly, is my Bowman line; Charlie Lee Bowman 1915. Thomas Jefferson Bowman 1874, John C. Bowman 1850. Cleon Bowman 1809, John Bowman abt 1783. The latter married Mary Beller in Patrick County, VA in 1808. John and Mary raised a large family in Patrick County that I Have been trying to trace.

John acquired several tracts of land in Patrick Countu, VA, and I have been searching for clues in deeds for about three years. I recently obtained copies of court records of two deeds that were the result of Court ordered sales of land that John Bowman gave to his son Alfred P Bowman, and son-in-law John Jackson before his death. I wanted to try to find out what prompted the court ordered sale, so I drove up to Stuart and spent about six hours reading Chancery Court records.

I found that there were two suits for debt that indirectly involved all of John Bowman’s children. One suit was against Elisha Bowman and another was against Anderson Bowman, both of whom had apparently left Patrick County without settling all of their accounts.

As I tried to follow these two cases through the records, I came across one court record that listed John Bowman's children as; Anderson Bowman, Cleon Bowman, Alfred P Bowman, William Bowman, Elisha Bowman, Ewell Bowman, Elizabeth, wife of Nelson Thompson, Nancy wife of John Jackson, and Christina, wife of Caswell P Montgomery.

This list was surprising to me in two ways. First, it included Anderson Bowman, who witnessed a deed for John Bowman, but was otherwise unconnected as far as shown by the records I have found. Second, the list did not include Fowlkes Bowman, who I had I thought was John Bowman’s child, mainly because he was listed with Ewell Bowman in the household of Mary Bowman, John’s Widow, in 1850.

When I got back from Stuart, I searched my records for information about an Anderson Bowman who was born between 1809 and about 1832, the respective birth years I think are probable for Cleon Bowman and Ewell Bowman, the oldest and youngest of the children of John Bowman and Mary Beller.

The first pertinent record that I found was the 1945 Court Order, that you knew about, which reported that James D. Cloud had been chosen Constable to fill a vacancy, “occasioned by the removal of Anderson Bowman”. I think that this record indicates that an adult Anderson Bowman had left Patrick County after having served as Constable. I do not think that the constable was the man named Anderson Bowman who was listed as 26 in the 1850 census in the household of William Bowman for two reasons. First, the Anderson in the 1850 census listing would have been just 21 in 1845, and second, he had not removed himself from the county.

The second pertinent record that I found in my files is an 1834 deed from Golihu Moore to John Bowman that was witnessed by Anderson Bowman, Aaron Bowman, and Clearan Bowman. This Anderson was presumably an adult in 1834, so he was born before 1814. I think that he was John Bowman’s son and that he probably was the Constable.

Do you know of any male Bowman who is a lineal descendant of Anderson Bowman b abt 1813?
