John Martin of Ballenger's Creek, Albemarle County, VA was first married to Jane, who was most likely Jane Gregg or Griggs. There are few records that state the parent-child relationship for the children of this couple but there is sufficient documentation to establish these 5 were siblings and there is documentation to show John Martin of Ballenger's Creek was their father.

Their 5 children who moved to Kentucky

1) Ann Martin - she married Benjamin Payne June 12, 1784 in Albemarle County, with John Martin giving security[1]. Ann Martin died and Benjamin then married her sister, Mary.

2) Mary Martin and Benjamin Payne were married April 9, 1789 in Amherst County, VA[2]. John Martin of Ballenger's Creek sold Benjamin Payne land on Ballenger's and Joe's Creek in 1802[3]. When Benjamin and Mary sold this land, they were of Nelson County, VA. Benjamin and Mary moved to Pikesville, Barren County, KY. Their son James Payne wrote a letter to his brother William in 1823 that identified John Martin [of KY] as their uncle[4]

  • "Pikesville, September 9, 1823" "Uncle John Martin has lost 5 horses and one negro woman since you was here".

When Benjamin Paye wrote his will[5] in 1831 he named his "trusty friend" William Martin as executor of his will. William gave bond in court May 21, 1832[6]. Benjamin's will also named his granddaughter Letitia Y Peyden [suggestive of being named after Letitia Young, wife of William Martin]. Information passed down in this family says that John and William Martin were twins.

3) John Martin - The first record of John is where his Peter's Creek land was surveyed in Warren County in 1797[7]. He witnessed a deed for James and William when they purchased land from Andrew McFaddin in 1798[8]

  • Sept 10, 1798, Andrew McFaddin to William and James Martin 1000 acres joining William Campbells 1000 acres. Witness John Martin and Rueben Fox.

4) William Martin - William first appears in tax records with James Martin in Fayette in 1791[9] but was probably the 2nd white male that James was taxed on in 1790[10]. In 1793 he was given Power of Attorney by his father[11].

  • Sept 10, 1793 - Know all men by these presents that I John Martain of the county of Albemarle and state of Virginia, for divers good causes and con[sidera]tions, do constitute, ordain, and appoint, my son William Martain [large portion of document missing here].. my said attorney my sole and full power of authority [missing text].. and receive all lands located for me in the state of Kentucky. signed by John Martin witnesses William Graves, William Arnall.

The following year tax lists show that John Martin, who was not living in Fayette County was taxed on 400 acres of land and that James Martin paid the taxes on the land.

1794 Property Tax - April 23[12]

  • Jno Martin (paid by Jas Martin) 400 acres
  • Jas Martin 1-0-6-3-5-17-0-223-300
  • Wm Martin 1-0-5-4-3-4-0-0-0

William married Letitia Young, daughter of William Young of Fayette County, and sister of Judith Young, wife of James Martin. Letitia was given 500 acres (half of a 1000 acre tract) by her father in his will.

  • 1793 will of William Young Fayette County, KY[13] - names Judith Martin and her husband James Martin. Names daughter Lettice Young and gives her (among other things) "one half of the William Campbell land for 1000 acres". Will was written in 1793 and entered into court in October 1793. The will was reentered into court record on May 3rd, 1803 "the record having been destroyed by fire".

For some reason William Campbell made a deed signing this land over to them in 1818.

  • 1818 - April 25 Barren County, KY[14]- William Campbell of Orange County, VA to William & Letitia Martin of Barron County, KY and Thomas & Patsey Carr of Fayette County, KY. Letitia & Patsey "being legal representative and devisees of William Young, deceased". For 100 pounds, 905 acres.

William was on the tax lists in Fayette County beside James through 1795 [see those below]. He was in Warren County by 1797 and taxed on 1000 acres on Peter's Creek[15]. James and John were not on the tax list that year.

5) James Martin - According to his Revolutionary War Pension Application[16], James was living in Albemarle when he enlisted in the war in 1779.

  • He “was born in August 1758, and was a resident of Albemarle County, Virginia when he enlisted in 1779 in Captain Peyton's Virginia Company.” Died May 11, 1848, leaving no widow."
  • Enlisted in the Army of the United States in 1779 final discharge 1783 “I left my fathers house in 1784 I never lived there since. The Affiant left with his father in Albemarle County, Va, where he then lived & where I first enlisted. All my papers including my discharge a due bill or __ I think showing there was due me from the government about $130. I have been living in Kentucky about 47 years. I was in the Indian campaigns almost ___ but two flesh wounds”... “When I returned to my father's house last April. I could find nothing. He was dead. His property scattered & I could find nothing of his affairs or my papers.”

James Martin was on the 1783 tax list beside John Martin BC[17].

  • John Martin BC
  • James Martin

He was not on the tax lists in 1784, 84, or 86 but was in 1787[18], again beside John Martin BC.

  • James Martin
  • John Martin BC

In 1787 John Martin gave his son James land. James sold that land 4 months later.

  • April 12, 1787 - John Martin to James Martin[19] - John Martin and Ann gave son James 305 acres land on Ballenger's Creek and Joe's Creek for "natural love and affection" plus 5 shillings.
  • Sept 13, 1787 James Martin of Albemarle sold to William Jeans of Albemarle, 305 acres on Ballenger's Creek[20].That was the last record for this James in Albemarle.

James was in Fayette County, KY by 1790 [tax lists are all shown below]. He married Judith Young prior to 1793 when William Young made his will. Besides purchasing the 1000 acres jointly with William in 1798, he also had 200 acres surveyed on Peter's Creek in 1797[21].

The biography for William McChesney Martin stated that the parents of James Martin were John Martin and Jane Greggs[22]. Also, genealogy papers written by the Shreve family show that they knew John Martin and Jane Gregg were named as the parents of James Martin[23]

Joseph Martin of Halifax, VA, Barren, KY, and Wayne, IL

Joseph Martin - This Joseph Martin owned land on Peter's Creek adjoining William Martin. Later he sold that land to William Martin. It would appear that there is no connection between him and the three Martin men who owned land around him, as he was clearly from Halifax County and the son of Nathan Martin, while they were clearly from Albemarle County and sons of John Martin of Ballenger's Creek. So far, no record that would show anything other than what was just stated, has been found. While it is certainly uncommon to find men of the same surname owning adjoining land but bearing no kinship, it would appear to be the case in this instance. YDNA indicates that these two families are in no way related through their paternal lines[24].

John Gregg or Griggs of Warren and Barren Counties

Do not know who he was. In 1797 200 acres were surveyed for John Griggs on "the water Creek"[25]. William Martin later owned this land, as tax records show that one of his 200 acre tracts was entered by and surveyed for John Gregg, sometimes written Griggs. John Griggs was in Barren County in 1799 when he was a chain carrier for Robert Brasel and for Ferdinand Hamilton both surveys were for land on Peter's Creek[26].

A different John Martin that is being confused with John Martin of Ballenger's Creek in Albemarle

John Martin of Goochland and Fluvanna County had land on Byrd and Ballenger's Creek. His land was in the part of Albemarle that fell into Fluvanna when it was formed in 1777. According to the Wikitree biography he was in Kentucky by 1787. He sold his land in Fluvanna County on Ballenger's Creek in April 1790 and was of Fayette County[47].
