Birth and Christening
Mary Ann was born in Kent, England in 1823. Per the inscription on her headstone, she was a native of Bexley.
The news clip about her wedding anniversary refers to Mary Ann's maiden name as Miss Mary Ann Boast. A christening record exists under the same name, dated 22 Apr 1827 in Crayford, Kent. Crayford is a town within Bexley, near Dartford. The parents listed on this record are William Boast and Barbara (Unknown). [1] Note that Barbara is the middle name given to Mary Ann's daughter Ellen.

Birth of Daughter
Mary Ann had a daughter, Ellen Barbara Vaughan, whose birth seems to have been registered twice at Dartford, Kent, England in the first quarter of 1844: Under the names Ellen Barbara Vaughan[3] Image available at findmypast.co.uk (subscription required); and Ellen Barbara Boast[4] Image available at findmypast.co.uk (subscription required).

On Ellen's death registration, her father was recorded as Mr. Vaughn. Her daughter Mary (Sims) Gandy was the informant.[6]
First Marriage
Mary Ann was married to Thomas Sheppard Reed. There is a matching marriage record for Mary Ann Boast (father William Boast) and Thomas Sheppard Reed at Bexley, Kent, England on 29 Oct 1848.[7] The marriage was registered at Dartford, Kent in the fourth quarter.[8]
1851 Census
Mary Ann was enumerated in the 1851 census, residing in Swanscombe, Kent with her husband, Thomas Reed (a carpenter) and her daughter, Ellen Boast, as well as her mother, Barbara Boast, and a niece, Barbara Boast.[9] Image available at findmypast.co.uk (subscription required).

While Barbara was residing with Mary Ann and Thomas at the time of the 1851 census, (marital status: married), William was not. Emigration
Mary Ann emigrated to Vancouver Island (later British Columbia, Canada) with her husband Thomas Reed and her daughter on the ship Norman Morison, arriving at Victoria on 16 Jan 1853.[11]
Death of First Husband
Thomas returned to England and passed away. A record for Thomas Reed lists a burial place of Parish Church of Hawkhurst, Hawkhurst, Kent, England in 4 Mar 1853.[12]
Second Marriage
Mary Ann married Edward Vine in 1854.
Mary Ann and Edward Vine celebrated their golden wedding anniversary (fifty years of marriage) at the family home in 1904. The corresponding news clip from the Nanaimo Daily News states that Edward and Mary were the first white people to be married on Vancouver Island, at Esquimalt. It also states that Mary Ann came to Canada aboard the ship Norman Morison in 1852 as Miss Mary Ann Boast.[13]

Death
Mary Ann passed away in Pedder Bay, Metchosin, British Columbia, Canada on 1 Mar 1907. Her death registration certificate lists her as aged 82, the wife of Edward Vine, born in Kent, England, religious denomination Church of England.[17]
Mary Ann's obituary in the Victoria Daily Times lists her as a native of Kent, England, aged 82, who emigrated to Vancouver Island in 1853, survived by her husband and one daughter.[18]
Funeral and Burial
Mary Ann's funeral took place at the family residence in Pedder Bay on 4 Mar 1907, and was officiated by Rev. Baugh Allen. The corresponding news clip from the Victoria Daily Times lists her as a resident of the district since 1958.[19] The pallbearers were:

Will and Estate
Mary Ann's will was signed and dated 18 Apr 1894, her husband the only heir listed.[21] The will was probated in 1907.[22]

"Don Parker and the pioneers"
In 1983, Elizabeth Gordan wrote an article that appeared in the Times Colonist (Victoria, BC) called "Don Parker and the pioneers." Don Parker was a great-grandson to Mary Ann Vine, and a grandson of Ellen Barbara Sims. This article mentions that Ellen Barbara's father Thomas Reid died "soon after the family arrived," that Ellen married William Walter Sims in 1859 at age 16, and that William named his land "Bexley" (later Beckley) after his wife's place of birth. The article also details several popular local stories about Mary Ann and Edward Vine.[23]
"Midwife to Metchosin"
In 2001, Danda Humphreys wrote an article that appeared in the Times Colonist (Victoria, BC) called "Midwife to Metchosin." This article details the relationship of Edward and Mary Ann Vine. It also discusses daughter Ellen Barbara's marriage to William Walter Sims, noting the estrangement that occured between mother and daughter "despite Ellen's best efforts" after the marriage due to Mary Ann's apparent disapproval.[24]

The book Wild Roses at Their Feet: Pioneer Women of Vancouver Island, written by Elizabeth Lamont Forbes and published in 1971, features a chapter about Mary Ann called "Mesachie Tyee."[27] Her midwifery is also mentioned in the chapter "Mistress of Sherwood," about her neighbour, Lillian Helgesen.

Barbara Whitlow was widowed at the time of her marriage to William Boast. No additional records have been located under the name Barbara Whitlow. It is possible that her maiden name is Barbara Richards: There is marriage record from Deptford, Kent for Barbara Richards and William Whitlow from 29 Jan 1821[30], as well as a burial record for William Whitlow, age 20, at Crayford, St Paulinus on 17 Oct 1821.
Death registration under the name Barbara Boast was recorded in Sheppey, Kent in 1854 and registered in the third quarter.[31] A burial for Barbara Boast took place at Sittingbourne, Kent on 27 Aug 1854.[32]
Sister Elizabeth was christened at Crayford on the same day as Mary Ann, 22 Apr 1827.[33]
Brother John was christened at Crayford on 1 Feb 1829.[34]
