Mary Ingram Lee

The goal of this project is to research the daughter of Richard Ingram: Mary Ingram Lee

For Research Purposes Only.

In his 1781 will Richard Ingram gives his daughter Mary Lee two slaves: a boy and a girl named Pen and Callop [Caleb]. It would be interesting to know where these slaves went or if they were inherited by anyone. Thomas Lee's wife Mary does not mention them in her will.

There is a Mary Lee, apparently a widow, in the Johnston County census of 1787 with a son and 2 daughters and 5 slaves and later in 1790 with 6 slaves:

1787 Captain Isaac Hinton's District
1787
Name: Mary Lee
1 Male under 21
3 Females including herself
2 Slaves - 12 to 50 years old ( could these be Pen & Callop (Caleb)?)
3 Slaves - under 12 and over 50
1790 Johnston County, North Carolina
1790.
Name: Mary Lee
Home in 1790 (City, County, State): Johnston, North Carolina
Free White Persons - Males - 16 and over: 1 [Her son would be born about 1774].
Free White Persons - Females: 3
Number of Slaves: 6
Number of Household Members: 10
1790 Johnston County, North Carolina
3rd collum 5th person from last

Birth Dates

For research purposes only.

The widow Mary Lee had 3 children: 1 male and 2 females.

Mary Lee - to have a 16 year old in 1790 (born 1774), her estimated birth date would be about 1759 or earlier. Richard Ingram's daughter Zilpha Avera was born 1760.

Mary Lee's husband would be born around 1755 more or less. They would be married before 1774. He died before the 1787 census.

Lees in Johnston County, North Carolina

In the 1700s there were many Lees in Johnston County, North Carolina, and in particular two different families of Lees. The Hugh Lee descendants and the John Lee Esq. descendants.

Descending from Hugh Lee down through Peter Lee were the brothers Cato Lee born about 1757 and David Lee born about 1756 and Winnifred Lee and many more not yet accounted for on WikiTree.

Cato Lee was listed as living quite near Mrs. Mary Lee in Capt. Isaac Hinton’s District in the 1787 Johnston County, NC census. And further down the list is David Lee. Winnifred Lee is on the preceding page under her newly-wed husband Isaac Ingram.

In conclusion, there are four possibly related Hugh Lee descendants living near each other in 1784-1787 Hinton's District, Johnston County, NC:

Mrs Mary Lee, widow. Could she be the daughter of Richard Ingram listed in his will?
David Lee
Cato Lee
Winnifred Lee married Isaac Ingram

Children of David Lee (b c 1756) and Anna Eldredge are:

Other Lees from the Hugh Lee line in Johnston County:

  2. Abner b 1735
  3. William
  4. Pheriby b 1739 m. (___) Lee

Questions for Consideration

Thomas Lee and his wife name their first son "Needham". If Richard Ingram's daughter, Mary Ingram, married Thomas Lee, why would she name her son "Needham"? "Needham" as a name belongs to Mary Bryan's family.

Furthermore, Needham Bryan posted bond for the guardian of Henry Rains, Mary's child, when Thomas Lee adopted him. Where are the Ingrams in this adoption?

Mary Bryan was the daughter of William Bryan. Henry named his first son "William". If Mary Ingram was the mother of Henry, why didn't Henry name even one son "Richard" after Richard Ingram?

Mary's son Henry Rains (b 1767) had children in this order:

  1. Sarah Raines 1791–1860 m James Kellems (20 OCT 1784 Virginia - 4 JAN 1843 Crawford County, Indiana)
  2. Mary Rains 1792–1872 m Spencer King Sr
  3. Sallie Margaret Rains 1793-1849 m Preston Whitley Davis Sr.
  4. William Rains 1800–1889
  5. Needham Lee Rains 1802–1849 m Nancy Turner (1807–1900)
  6. Patsy Rains 1802–1879 m Joseph Turner (1811-1891)
  7. Ballenger Rains 1805–1859 m Peggy Margaret Marcy/Marlee
  8. Henry Lane Rains 1807–1870 m Margaret Lane
  9. John Rains 1819–1880 m Cynthia Pearcy/Pierce

Note

Birth dates were copied from the profiles but birth dates keep changing just like the boundaries of the land in the colonies so it's hard to keep them up to date.
