SUMMARY AND INDEX TO THE MARY RUSSELL CARTER LETTERS
This collection includes letters written by Mary Russell Carter, Belmont County, Ohio, to her son Ephraim and Nancy Millison Carter in Brown County, Indiana. The collection also includes two letters written by her son, Fluallen Carter, addressed to his brother, Ephraim Carter. The letters cover the period 1853 to 1878.
The original letters were in the collection of Nancy Hays Deckard, Modesto, California. in 2008. Some parts of the letters are unreadable, and there are a few fragments of letters. They were scanned and transcribed by Jill Carter Knuth.
- 1853 April 2. Addressed to "Dear Children" from Mary Carter, mother of Ephraim Carter. Two pages. Brief reports on various family members and friends. Concern about a box of belongings shipped to Indiana by boat.
- 1854, August. Addressed to "Respected Children" from Mary Carter, mother of Ephraim Carter. One page. Death of Wyatt Carter, son of Mary Carter. Birth of grandson, Wyatt, son of Powell Carter. Report of visitors.
- 1857 March 22. Addressed to "Dear Brother" from Fluallen Carter to his brother, Ephraim. Two pages. A depressing letter reporting the writer's poor health, deaths in the neighborhood, and a long religious tirade.
- 1865 August 10. Addressed to "Dear and Well Beloved Children" from Mary Carter. Three pages. Report on family members. Concerns about the children's reaction to their father's will. (Benjamin Carter had died on 7 Jan 1865.)
- 1869 February 4. Addressed to "Dear Beloved Children and Grandchildren" written by Mary Carter. Two pages. [The letter has been folded in quarters and one quarter is missing.] Death of the Millison (?) grandmother. Saga of an unidentified elderly relative who needed a place to live.
- 1878 April 21. Addressed to "Dear Brother" signed by Fluallen Carter. Two pages. Concerning money owed to Ephriam Carter. The handwriting in the body of the letter and the signature are by two different hands, and neither is like the hand of the earlier letter by Fluallen Carter.
