Mater Dolorosa Cemetery was opened in 1934 on land owned at that time by the Notre Dame Cemetery. There are two entrances along Pittroff Avenue. There is no road connection to the Notre Dame Cemetery which is adjacent. Mater Dolorosa Cemetery is used by the Polish Catholics of Holyoke and is associated with the Mater Dolorosa Church of Holyoke.
The oldest section of the cemetery backs to Notre Dame Cemetery to which it once belonged. Death records for those buried here prior to the 1934 opening of Mater Dolorosa, will list Notre Dame as burial place. Stones here are extremely worn and, unfortunately, many were damaged by vandals in 2008.
