In December 2020, the project was notified of a Y-STR 37 match between several project members and a descendant of William Blatchford, an 1851 emigrant to New Zealand. Originally the match was not deemed relevant because historically such matches tend to gain genetic distance as the number of STRs increase from 37 to 111.
In order to substantiate the match, the project elected to order a test for SNP Y14084 on the DNA sample submitted by Blatchford descendant identified as project member B0. The SNP test results were returned in February of 2021 and B0 was found positive for SNP Y14084 indicating he and all the Mattingly-Matney project members shared a common ancestor. A more definitive test seemed prudent.
A Y-chromosome test was ordered in February with results returned in late May 2021.

Conclusions

B0 carries the Y-chromosome mutations identified in the Y14084* SNP group believed to be carried by Thomas Mattingly I.
  • Thomas Mattingly I and William Blatchford clearly share a common ancestor.
  • The common ancestor is most likely not of recent origins. The absence of 17th century genealogical records and the lack of identifiable present day Blatchford DNA donors may prevent identification of the shared common ancestor.
B0 carries STR marker Y-Gata-A10 = 13, a result typically seen in the descendants of Cesar Mattingly.
  • The Project assumes this finding infers Thomas Mattingly I carried STR marker Y-Gata-A10 = 13 which he passed to his sons, Thomas Mattingly II and Cesar Mattingly.
  • STR marker Y-Gata-A10 = 13 remains unchanged in the descendants of Cezar.
  • STR marker Y-Gata-A10 = 14 appears to be a mutation first appearing with the descendants of Thomas Mattingly II as indicated by its presence in his present day descendants.
